late workWhat happened to all of the Metaphorical Responses that were promised to me over the weekend?

Dudes! C’mon!

So today, we are starting the pre-writing for the Beowulf Values Essay. There are seven (7) stations for you to address.

The more time you spend on this today, the easier writing the essay will be tomorrow.

I gave you one of the Anglo-Saxon values that first block helped fill out:

Today, we finished The 13th Warrior. Hope you liked it! There are extra credit questions that I gave you in you wanted to work on those.

I also gave an extension of the Metaphorical Response – so the new due date is today.

Rather than start the Values Essay, I gave you time to work on late work instead. Because I’m awesome!

Since we finished reading Beowulf yesterday, today, we started watching The 13th Warrior, a movie that is based on Beowulf. It was originally a novel written by Michael Crighton, the man who wrote Jurassic Park, Timeline, and other blockbuster movies.

When writing The Eaters of the Dead, he based it off of two things: Beowulf and Ahmad ibn Fadlan’s accounts of traveling with the Volga Vikings. I went into this much detail because of Alex!
Hope you guys enjoy the movie – it’s my favorite Beowulf movie out there!

We started class out by doing the Othello anticipation guide.

Then, we watched a couple of videos about Italian stereotypes and discussed those. Louis was a little unhappy with the guy in video 1, but other than that, we agreed with most (if not all) of what he was saying.

Then, you chose an article about Jersey Shore and did the Jersey Shore Analysis.

Jersey ShoreWe talked about why Othello chose Italy as the setting for his play Othello:

settingThen, the last thing you did was discuss Italian stereotypes and what we can do to end prejudice.

We finished Beowulf today  The Spoils and The Farewell. Things we discussed in detail:

  • Wiglaf was Beowulf’s cousin – B-wulf never got married, or had kids, so he gave the kingdom to his next-of-kin, who proved himself
  • Beowulf’s dying request was the tower, so that people could remember him
  • He was cremated and buried with the treasure
  • The monks tried to compare him to Jesus, but we poo-pooed that idea. Beowulf isn’t MILD. He’s not a Ghost Chile Pepper, but he’s definitely at least a jalapeno. We realized that Vistas lost a lot our spicier teachers from last year.

I gave you time to work on the Metaphorical Response, which is due today.

2/11/2015 – B

I had a hard time in English classes as a student when we read Shakespeare because I hated all the “research” we did about his life. When Shakespeare was born, when he died, how many kids he had, and all about the Globe stage. BOR-ING.

Part of my job is to make the stuff we read RELEVANT, so that’s what today is all about. You might not realize what this article today has to do with reading Shakespeare, but I promise it will make sense when we finish reading the play. :) I’m a tricky teacher!

20140421_093507[1]So, today we did a Socratic seminar over An American Honor Killing. I highlighted the essay for names and also had a chart in the wall showing the relationships between people.

We watched a few videos over an Honor Killing in America and the Released Audio Tapes in Honor Killing.20140421_093521[1]

Then, we took the fish pillows and went outside to have a Socratic Seminar about An American Honor Killing.

Today, I gave you time to write your essay:

In the movie The Bucket List, who exemplified carpe diem more: Carter or Edward?

Hopefully, you’ll find the pre-writing that we did yesterday helpful, either with your introduction, conclusion, or your content.

carpe diem text structureI gave you a few options on how to organize this essay, but do not think these are the ONLY two ways to structure your essay!

Some things to think about:

  • Don’t turn this into a summary of the movie
  • Your thesis should be the last sentence of the introduction

We will be taking these completed essays and “pimping” them out for a few details, namely your introduction, your conclusion, quotes, and general mechanical problems.

2/10/15 – A

Today, we watched Legowulf Part 2 to review The Battle with Grendel’s Mother and then we added to our foldable.

We will finish Beowulf tomorrow and we will also finish the foldable tomorrow as well.

We then talked about how after Beowulf defeated Grendel’s Mother, he went back home to Geatland and eventually became king of the Geats. He ruled for 50 years when he had to defend his kingdom against a dragon. But it’s been a long time. Beowulf has gotten OLD. But even though he’s an elderly man, he can still kick butt and take names. Like Hub in Secondhand Lions.

I love this clip (and movie) because it shows not only can Hub still be dangerous, it shows his values. He even boasts!

I’m Hub McCann. I’ve fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I’ve seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I’ve won and lost a dozen fortunes, KILLED MANY MEN and loved only one woman with a passion a FLEA like you could never begin to understand. That’s who I am. NOW, GO HOME, BOY!

Wow. I get goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

Afterward we watched that, we read The Last Battle. Things we discussed:

  • Beowulf knows he’s old and takes precautions
  • This isn’t a suicide mission
  • His first thought is still of his people – it’s always been about his people
  • He knows fate is against him, YET he still stays to fight the dragon
  • We can’t all be Beowulf, but we can be Wiglaf

I then gave you time to work on the Metaphorical Response. This is due tomorrow!

Since we finished watching The Bucket List last week, we started pre-writing for our essay tomorrow. Basically, what I did was rewrite the pre-writing that I had for Term 2 – It wasn’t effective, and I don’t like giving out work that doesn’t HELP you, ya’ know?

So, this is a new pre-writing activity. I honestly don’t know how long it will take you guys. You’ll notice that Section 6 is messed up – just skip that one for now. I obviously got distracted and my brain skipped a beat while writing.

Hopefully, this will help you write the actual essay tomorrow!

Shout out to Louis, who got his first tattoo(s) on Friday after our conversation about tattoos in class! Carpe inkum! Gosh, my class is so relevant. 😉
