2/13/2015 – A

Today, we finished The 13th Warrior. Hope you liked it! There are extra credit questions that I gave you in you wanted to work on those.

I also gave an extension of the Metaphorical Response – so the new due date is today.

Rather than start the Values Essay, I gave you time to work on late work instead. Because I’m awesome!

Today, we read about Grendel’s Mother. And I got to show off my EPIC pencil – so AWESOME that no ordinary student can write with it!

Things we talked about:

  • how long a Navy Seal can hold his breath
  • I was wrong! From what I read, ALL Navy Seals have to be men
  • Beowulf’s will
  • Hrothgar’s gift giving
  • Beowulf’s focus on his people (if he dies)
  • Why Beowulf is so focused on fame
  • Unferth’s wergild (Hrunting)
  • Beowulf’s numerous failures
  • loyalty of the Geats

Then, I gave you time to work. You had about an hour. If you did not turn in your Beo-Boast, that should be your priority since progress reports come out tomorrow. If that was turned in, then go ahead and get started on your Metaphorical Response.

HAR is a Houston real estate site where you can look for homes to buy or lease. I used it a lot when I was looking to buy a home. It’s actually really cool!

I want you to use the search feature and find three homes in your zip code: one home under 120,000, one home under 200,000, and one home over 200,000. Notice how the language changes between the different types of houses. If you found a foreclosure, a lot of times, they use the words “fixer-upper”, but that generally means that the house will be cheaper because it is not in good condition.

If you need help navigating the webpage, I can help you figure things out. πŸ™‚

We read The Monsters’ Lair, which was really short, because it’s only one page (easy!) and looked at the descriptive language.

1/30/2015 – A

We reviewed what we read yesterday by adding information to the foldable that we made yesterday. We added information about Hrothgar and Beowulf.

Hrothgar

  • King of the Danes
  • helpless against Grendel
  • he “wept”

Grendel

  • Descendant of Cain (1st murderer)
  • doesn’t follow Anglo-Saxon values
  • Comes out at night
  • Can’t touch Hrothgar’s throne
  • hell-forged hands (kenning)
  • kills for fun

We read The Coming of Beowulf today – wow. What I can I say about Beowulf? He’s pretty awesome.

He really represents the values of the Anglo-Saxons. We talked about the difference between being COCKY and CONFIDENT – and that Beowulf was confident.

We also discussed why it was significant that Beowulf asked Hrothgar for permission to kill Grendel rather than busting in and kill stealing.

Then, I gave you some flex time to either work on missing assignments (MSG = a zero in the gradebook!) or to work on the Metaphorical Response.

Everyone should thank Areli for having a little bit of flex time today, She was so sweet and nice that I couldn’t refuse her. πŸ™‚

So, we are still doing the activity, but I’ve cut it down. You can find this in Carpe Diem: Seize the Day: Carpe Diem Analysis. You only have to do two: Hay for the Horses and another one (poem or song) of your choice. If you do more, you’ll get extra points. If you are shooting for the A, do more work! Earn it, baby!

I passed out booty today and all of my grades are caught up. If you have found a mistake (which seems to happen to my first block ladies a lot!), put a note in the Parking Lot so I can fix it. If you just TELL me, I won’t remember.

2/10/2014

I started out the day by reviewing my expectations for the Metaphorical Response. The ones that have been turned in to me have been a little weak, and I don’t know if that’s because people forgot all the material was in BB, if they were just rushing to get it turned in, or if I did a poor job explaining the instructions.

  • Make sure that you use real METAPHORS.
  • Make sure you use QUOTES (not paraphrases) that are properly cited with LINE NUMBERS.
  • You only need ONE quote per metaphor!
  • Focus on the third column – this is where you should spend MOST of your time here.
  • Make sure you go look at the Hamlet example in BB.

Today, we finished Beowulf. We started by watching a clip from Secondhand Lions to show how Beowulf could be old (>70) and still be strong and powerful. I stopped doing the Post-It notes – that was a dumb idea that I had. The idea behind was that I wanted to give you guys a PURPOSE for reading, but it just ended up being a time waster for you instead of helping. Don’t worry about that. πŸ™‚

We read The Last Battle, The Spoils, and The Farewell.

I ended up giving you guys Flex Time so hopefully, you used your time wisely. Because I am SUCH a nice person, if you turn in your Beo-Boast or Metaphorical Response TODAY, I won’t give you late points. πŸ™‚

Canaan, we miss you! We are super sad without you! Come back soon!
