We started today talking about Death and the Devil Surprising Two Maidens. If you weren’t here today, there is a drop box assignment for this in the Carpe Diem folder in Obituary.

Then, we read Grandma Betty’s Obituary from the Blog of Death. What an amazing woman! Seriously, this is the legacy that I’d like to leave when I die! I love Grandma Betty!

Then, we looked at the Blog of Death in a little more detail. I skimmed through and showed you a few people that were of interest to me, and I showed you how to use the categories, even though I wish there was a place to actually see all of the categories!

The point of that was that we are searching for really good sentences that we can use as models or mentors when we start writing our major grade next week.

Mentor Sentences

You have to find FIVE great opening lines. That is the opening line(s) of an obituary, not the paragraph. You have to find five great endings for an obit, and you’ll need to find five good general lines from anywhere in an obituary.

DO NOT JUST CHOOSE THE FIRST FIVE OBITS THAT YOU FIND AND CHOOSE THREE LINES FROM EACH. That is not the point of this, and it won’t help you write your paper next week. Seriously. This is NOT busy work, so if you get done in five minutes, that’s a sign to me that you just chose random sentences without thought.

If you want extra credit, if you find a really interesting Obit, put the person’s name in the last column so I can share it with other students. :)

I also have a list of the people that I find fascinating if you are getting stuck stuck looking people. As of right now, it’s not in Blackboard, so let me know if you need it. :)

Gradespeed is finally up! Grades are currently being updated so look for a complete average on Monday during VV.

Last night, I took all of your post-it’s note and typed them up. I want you to cross out the items that would create regret when the person realized that death was not imminent.

For example, if I wrote that I wanted to give away all of my money to charity, I probably would regret that once I realized that I was going to live. You aren’t judging – it’s not whether it’s GOOD or BAD – it’s about regret.

We then talked about the difference between YOLO and Carpe Diem and then we categorized tweet based on which hash tag we thought it should have. Any tweet that is CARPE DIEM is going to be BLUE and any YOLO tweet is RED.

hashtag1Each tweet is its own picture. Click the picture and then click Picture Tools (in pink).  You’ll get a whole bunch of options.

Lastly, I briefly introduced our first major grade: The Obituary. We are in the CARPE DIEM unit and this is a great way to show not only that you understand carpe diem, but how you can apply this to your real life. That’s relevance! This is supposed to be an INSPIRING activity and it’s fairly easy – if you have goals. If you don’t have goals, it can be a bit difficult, so to assist with that, we are going to do a FUTURE TIMELINE.

Using the following resource, create a timeline of at least ten major events in your life AFTER graduation. I just want a title and a picture for each event. The more detailed you get here, the easier the major grade writing will be.

Happy Halloween!

We started out today with the most appropriate picture: Death and the Devil Surprising Two Maidens.

Death and the Devil Surprising Two WomenWe talked a lot about the picture while we did the KWL chart that can be found in BB (Carpe Diem: Seize the Day).

Print to OneNote and fill in what you KNOW about the picture in the first column and fill in the second column: what you WANT TO LEARN (questions). We filled in the LEARNED column in class after a discussion, but if you missed, you won’t be able to fill in the LEARNED column. Publish this as a PDF or a single web page and drop it off in the drop box.

After that, we printed the lyrics to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get in On”, listened to the song, and highlighted persuasive language in BLUE and highlighted references to TIME in yellow. Answer the three questions and drop off your highlighted lyrics (if you were absent so I can give you credit for highlighting).

We talked about the speaker and his audience (a girl) and analyzed that relationship. We highlighted evidence of carpe diem (time) in the poem, highlighted IRONY in the song, and highlighted references to LOVE in the song. We also specifically talked about how the song was contradictory and how it related to TIME (“stop beating ’round the bush”, and “this minute”).

Students then sat there puzzled as to why we listened to that song, so we read “To His Coy Mistress” to explain. It’s the original “Let’s Get It On”, just much creepier.

Lastly, we did the Syllogism Pyramid foldable. You can find the template in LMS.

For each triangle, create a text box and write the following:

  • If… (1st stanza – lines 1-20) + image
  • But… (2nd stanza – lines 21-32) + image
  • So… (3rd stanza – lines 33-46) + image

You will need to ROTATE the text box. Grab the little green ball and turn it. Make sure that the text box faces the hypotenuse. Don’t worry about the text that is already on the pyramid – that will be hidden when you fold it up.

One good thing about this class is that we are the ONLY IVB class in Vistas, so that means we aren’t going to be trying to keep pace with another class. We can work at our OWN pace.

Today, we watched the trailer for The BucketList – you seemed really interested in this movie. I may have to go ahead and show this when we get to a stopping point.

Then, we talked about what we’d do if we only had 48 hours left to live – what would you regret if you found out the doctor was WRONG!?!

We watched and talked about the Buried Life on MTV and then created our OWN bucket list on www.bucketlist.org. Remember that this is not an account where I can access/change your username/password, so you’ll have to keep track of this. I’ll need ten significant items by next Friday. Make sure you follow me so that I can see your list. 🙂

WE looked at Death and the Devil Surprising Two Maidens today and answered the discussion questions in BB. You guys had some great thoughts and comments. Death and the Devil Surprising Two WomenYou all seemed to really understand the relevance of this topic and seemed eager to approach it.

Lastly, I gave you time to finish your Bucket List Prewriting. If you get stuck thinking of things for your Bucket List, go back to these questions and see if you can find items that can help you accomplish the goals in this pre-writing. You can do it either as a Word doc or just as a message.

Phew! I sure wish that there was ONE day when all of my students show up for school!

We started out today by answering some questions over Death and Devil Surprising Two Maidens in LMS.

After that, we worked on a foldable translating the source for Carpe Diem. It’s a PowerPoint in LMS called Tower Translation.

You will read the four sentences, and then translate each sentence in your own thought. Add some clip art.

Make sure you have a clip art! You may need to resize the font. Then cut thusly:

And then fold/glue.

And lastly, we download the Carpe Diem poems into OneNote.

Today, we read To The Virgins, To Make Much of Time. Make sure that you get the notes here:

Today, we used our Gaggle e-mail accounts to create an account with Bucketlist.org. Make sure that you are opening the link in its own window – if you try to open this inside the frame of LMS, you won’t be able to login.

We checked out the discussion board over Death and Devil Surprising Two Maidens – we had a great discussion over it! It’s amazing the things you guys identify and notice.

Riley showed us a clip over carpe diem from Dead Poet’s Society, and then we did the Carpe Diem tower translation. For each sentence, write a translation in the bottom square. Throw in an appropriate piece of clip art – you may have to resize the font. Print it for yourself – keep it in your folder, but drop off the PDF in teh Drop Box so Riley can grade it.

Some people started the Bucketlist pre-writing, but Riley said she’d give us time tomorrow to work on this.

We looked at the pictures Death and the Devil Surprising Two Maidens and answered the questions about it. Make sure you use complete sentences and that you answer each question fully. Mrs. Holloway had deep thoughts about this pictures.h

Then, we listened to Don’t Fear the Reaper and answered the questions about that song. Mrs. Mahnke came by and jammed out with she 0 she is a fan of BOC.

Riley then gave out the instructions for the Obituary, which we would have time to write on Monday. Remember – be really old so that you can show how you “capre diem’ed” your life. The point of of an obituary is not about death – it’s about LIFE and what you did. You will be writing this in 3rd person.
