Oak ’em! Welcome to your LAST first day of high school! I’m so excited to be here at Klein Oak teaching English IV for the 2016-2017 school year.

Warning: I am very silly, passionate, and I don’t spend a lot of time behind my desk. I will probably dance, sing, and wear costumes. All in the name of education.

Today, I introduced myself, my first mate (co-teacher) Ms. Miller, and we created character sheets. I’ll be looking at your Nature, Demeanor, your attributes (7/5/3), and your R’s.

Make sure that you turn in your AGR, Clinic Cards, and the rest of the first day information packet ASAP.

I also posted the instructions for how to sign up for my Remind class (sadly, only a few people have signed up for it as of 8/27).

So, for those of you who weren’t here today, hello! Even though this is my first year at Oak, I spent the past ten years teaching English IV at the Vistas High School Program. I have also rated essays for the SAT test, written curriculum for Klein ISD, and tutored at the Second Change Program.

I know we are going to have a great year at Klein Oak and I look forward to getting to know you all!

welcome-back-to-vf1zk7Welcome to the first day of term 3! We have a nice mix of returning students, new students, and even Saydi is back! Yay!

This is a really easy way to catch up on what we did in class yesterday (or any day, for that matter). Just make sure that you are looking at the blog post for the B class since I’m also teaching the A part of the class at the same time.

We started today off with a brief welcome! A few things about myself – yes, I am pregnant and expecting boy/girl twins in May. I do things a little differently than a typical English teacher – I’m not afraid of looking like a dork if it’s going to help you remember material. We work in this class everyday, but it’s generally not hard work. I usually don’t freak out over cell phones unless you are spending more time on your cell phone than your actual class work OR if you are on your cell phone while I am directly teaching.

We signed up for Dyknow as well. I use it more for an educational tool than a babysitting tool, but I still use it. 🙂

I did explain a few key differences of my class: namely, that I am on a point system. There most points you can earn for the term is 1500 points. That means that if you have 1500 points at the end of the term, you will have earned 100%. If you earn 1300/1500 points, you’ll have earned a 90, 1200 points earns an 80, 1100 points is a 73, and 1050 points is a 70.Levels

The first thing we did on Day One was create to characters for The Pride of Riley. The things that I’ll be focusing on when I grade them are your Nature, Demeanor, Attributes, and your (4) R’s. If you weren’t here, you can find this material in BB under Welcome to the Ship: First Day Stuff: Gamification.

The big things that I will be grading are your Nature and Demeanor, your Attributes (7/5/3), and your R’s. Remember the nuggets are your learning objectives!

We then did the First Day Survey. You can find that in BB, but the link can also be found here.

Lastly, you guys drew me a picture for my belated birthday present! We ran out of time to get the reflection questions done, but we’ll start class with that tomorrow. Bryan, that means the only thing you’ll need to do on your own are the character sheet and the First Day Survey.

Welcome to the first day of term 3! At this point, I only have returning students, so make sure to say hi to some of the n00bs! We were all there at one point!

We also did a neat little test circling numbers. It was more of an experience than an assignment, so if you missed it, you missed some fun. Basically, it was to explain how I view my role as a teacher.

Lastly, we watched a graduation speech turned into a spoken word song.

You can see the video on YouTube HERE and you can find the lyrics HERE.

sunscreen questions

If you did not get the questions done (2B ran out of time!), just turn them in the “Old School Dropbox” when you get them done.

8.25.14 – B

Welcome to Vistas! This first day of school was pretty uneventful, but I’m excited for all of my classes. It may take me a little bit to get all of your names, but just bear with me. Especially if I have already messed up your name.

Today, we only worked on the character sheet and did normal first day activities. If you missed today, this is the first grade in the gradebook. You can get a Character Sheet from me. You will need to fill in the following:

  • Name
  • Nature
  • Deameanor
  • the 4 R’s (Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, Rigor)

To fill in your Nature and Demeanor, go First Day Stuff in Blackboard. Find the list of Nature and Demeanor Archetypes. Read through them. Find one that is your TRUE SELF – your NATURE. This is the CORE of your being, it never changes. People may not always SEE it, but this is who you truly are.

You demeanor is the mask you wear. You will find there are lots of masks you wear – choose the one you most often wear at school.

For example, my nature is Architect and my demeanor is Jester.

The the four R’s, you have 10 dots to spread among the four categories, YOU CAN ONLY USE TEN DOTS – NO MORE. This may be confusing, so either ask me or ask a classmate if this isn’t making sense.

We then did the First Day survey – this can also be found in the First Day folder on Blackboard.

We were able to get the first part of Creative Coloring done (we drew the pictures), but we are going to have to finish the response tomorrow.

Please note that I am teaching an A and a B section at the same time, so don’t assume that all of these posts apply to you.

Welcome to Term 3

If this is your first time on board, welcome! If you are a returning member, I’m glad to have you back! :)

After that, we did Creative Coloring and the discussion board to go along with it. If you weren’t here, do the best you can answering the questions over group work, but you should focus on the fact that you were absent and how absences affect group and partner work.

First Block was able to get a little more work done because we didn’t have Vistas Visits, but the rest of my classes stopped there.

Welcome to Term 3!

If this is your first time on board, welcome! If you are a returning member, I’m glad to have you back! :)

So glad I got to meet all of my present students (unless you were a dork and ended up sitting in Mrs. Bollato’s class for the entirety of Block 1).

If you were absent, you can probably catch up without staying after school, but you’ll need someone to explain the details of what we did.

Most classes were able to do the First Day survey (located in First Day Stuff: A Few Assignments). It’s a pretty short survey, so 2nd block can do it tomorrow.

And lastly, we did a neat little test circling numbers. It was more of an experience than an assignment, so if you missed it, you missed some fun.

See you all tomorrow, mateys!

We then talked a little bit about The Buried Life and the book that resulted from the tv show. The trailer was really moving and those of you who hadn’t seen it before were interested in watching the tv show.

Lastly, we talked about what we would do if we only had 48 hours left to live. If you were absent for this, make sure you get a post-it note and write down what you would do. You do not need to put your name on it, but please make sure to keep it school appropriate.

I will have separate categories for A and B, so if you know how to do an RSS feed, you can only look at the section that applies to you. Or, you can just ignore the posts that you don’t need to see.

I take a lot a pictures that usually end up here on my blog, so just be aware that if you need visual examples, this is the place to check. 🙂

Welcome to Term 4!

We have ten weeks in this term, so let’s make the most of it!

Today was pretty ding dang simple. We created character sheets (focus on the nature/demeanor and the R’s). For the nature and demeanor, look at the list in LMS – choose ONE that describes you at your most basic – who you REALLY really are. Your demeanor is the mask you wear here at school, what you present to the world. You may find that you see lots that describe you in different situations – choose your nature as the true you, and choose the demeanor that you use here at school most of the time.

We also did the First Day Survey.

Creative Coloring is an activity that we did as a group – if you missed out on this one, you’ll have to do some dinky make up grade since you missed the whole point of the group work. For those who WERE here, we drew a picture and then answered some questions in the discussion board. GIGO!

Lastly, we answered What You Heard, What You Know in LMS. It’s pretty simple – if you are a new student, write down one thing that you heard about Riley or her class. If you have had Riley before, write down one thing you learned from her – you can either do this as a new post or as a comment to another student’ post.

IV – 10/29/2012

Welcome to Term 2!

Remember, you can exempt your finals this term! You have to have an 80 average in your class and meet the following requirements:

  • Have no more than three absences in Term 2
  • Have recieved no more than five tardies in Term 2 (three tardies = 1 absence)
  • Have not been suspended or been OSS during the school year
  • Have maintained and conduuct grade of an “E”, “S”, or “N” for the term.

Today, we created character sheets – make sure you complete your nature, demeanor, Attributes, and your five R’s.

Then, we did Creative Coloring – make sure that you answer the questions in the Discussion Board in complete sentences.

Don't steal my gold!
