I am so excited by the conversations and conferences that is happening in 198 today. TEACHER HAPPY DANCE!

I noticed a few things when skimming Google Docs this morning:

  1. Make sure you are writing on MY Google Doc so that I can see your daily progress.
  2. Make sure that your thesis is specific enough to fully answer the prompt and not just restate the prompt.

If you need help with writing a succint yet specific thesis, I have a file of template thesis sentences for literary analysis for you to look at in Schoology.

1/24/23

We are starting our essay today! Make sure that you READ and understand the parameters of the assignment.

A few important reminders: Write on my Google Doc. I will be looking at your process, so if you copy/paste from another source, I won’t be able to see that.

A lot of the choices regarding the essay are up to you: your structure and how much evidence you put in. This is intentional. I know you aren’t used to this, but this is an expectation in collegiate level writing.

I am going to hop on the documents before class starts tomorrow to give quick feedback for those who have soemething written down.

Please make sure you a confident and comfortable with the task before the weekend hits. The TurnItIn due date is on Sunday and 11:59 and the Schoology/Google Doc due date is 1/31.

Today, we talked about Apply Texas, a helpful webpage for people who are going to college in Texas. It’s a central location where you can submit one application for a multitude of Texas colleges and universities – and you only have to pay one fee! Pretty cool, right? Right! Some of you might not *need* this essay, and others of you (who are going to A&M) will be writing two of them!

We are writing Essay A:

apply

This is a very broad topic. So in order to help arrow down our ideas, we did a brainstorming activity in Blackboard. We went over my examples and I gave it to you to use as a model.

On Monday, we will choose the text structure for the essay and start writing it.

The Big Grade: our first major writing grade!

Today, we started out by talking about obituaries in general. They are the written notices of death that usually include a brief biography of the person. Then we read the poem The Dash by Linda Ellis and talked about that poem supports this quote from the Blog of Death:

Some people view obituaries as morbid stories, but in truth only one line of an obit deals with death. The rest of the story focuses on the amazing lives people lead.

We also read the obituary that I wrote that I’ve been writing for the past ten years. Honestly, it has inspired me. Every time I read it, it’s a reminder of what I want to do. While you guys are finishing writing this tomorrow, I’ll be editing my own – I need to add my children! <3

We are going to write our OWN obituary in class. You need to focus on CARPE DIEM – how did you make your life extraordinary? You will need to be at least 75 years old (or older) – it’s hard to carpe diem a life when it’s short. Think about the Bucket List pre-writing and the Bucket List that we did this week – use those to find your focus. Is it family? Is it being successful? Is it helping other people? Use that focus to help you figure out details and events to your life.

Under Carpe Diem: Obituary, you can find instructions and examples, one of which being my own. Yes, I do every assignment that I ask you to do. The reason that I do this is so that I can share things that helped me when I did the assignment. The thing that helped ME the most when I wrote my obit was the Blog of Death. Seriously. I used it not for ideas, but for sentence structures and modeling. Use your Sentence Models that we did on Tuesday for help and inspiration!

For example, here is the first sentence of Demetius Newton’s obituary:

Rep. Demetrius C. Newton dedicated his life to improving the human condition, first as a civil rights attorney and later as a politician and public servant.

It’s a great sentence, but obviously, I’m not a civil rights attorney, politician, or a public servant. But it’s a great sentence.

So what I would do is this: I’d take out the specific information and leave blanks.

_____ dedicated her life to improving ____________, first as a ________ and later as a __________.

Now that it’s not specific, I can add in my own information.

Vanessa Riley dedicated her life to educating others, first as a teacher and later as the director of the at-risk high school that she founded.

If you look in BB, you can see the rubric that will be used to grade the obituary. You need to have a minimum of 500 words.

2/17/2015 – A

Today was a pretty simple day. We just wrote our values essay over the values in Anglo-Saxon life and the values in modern day American life.

We used the pre-writing from yesterday and the text structures to help us organize our thoughts.

text structures for anglo saxon values

I also reminded you that there were LOTS of resources in the Values Essay folder in Beowulf, including a list of suggested ways to start an essay (including examples).

If you need help, I can jump on your computer and give you English teacher advice. This is the only day in class that we will have devoted to this, so if you want English teacher help from me, get it either today or after school.

This will be due on Friday.

So today we start out Othello essay over guilt and responsibility.

You will need to have a thesis and organize your paper by paragraphs. Remember, a paragraph is a UNIT of THOUGHT, not 4-5 sentences.

So, here is a sample essay for a student:

  • Introduction
  • Why is Iago guilty/responsible?
  • Why is Othello guilty/responsible?
  • Why is Roderigo guilty/responsible?
  • Why is Emilia guilty/responsible?
  • Why is Cassio guilty/responsible?
  • Conclusion

This would be a 7 paragraph essay. It doesn’t mean its going to be 7 pages long – some paragraphs will be longer/shorter than other.

Instructions are in BB and give a lot of information. Go to BB:Othello:Guilt and Responsibility. The instructions, drop box, and the MLA template are all located in the drop box.

Use the MLA template for writing your essay – just replace the file with YOUR information,.

Also, your first paragraph needs to have an INTRODUCTION and a THESIS. The thesis is the last sentence of your first paragraph.

thesisFor your intro, you need BOTH the yellow and the blue! Here are some ways to write an intro and here is a way to write a thesis.

Then, write your content paragraphs and your conclusion. We will have a little time tomorrow to work on the paper, but NOT THE ENTIRE TIME.

Arrrgh!

Today, we had another quest: to write an analytical essay over leadership in Beowulf and King Arthur.

What is an analytical essay. you ask? Well, when you analyze something, you are examining it detail, breaking it down idea by idea.

You are going to be explaining leadership in this essay. Don’t just give me a summary of the leadership in these two stories: DISCOVER something about leadership. If you need help, use the Training Wheels that I gave you as a printout (you can also find these Training Wheels in the Writing folder in LMS).

So when you look at the essay topic, don’t just address the leadership from the title characters – look at how other characters show positive and negative leadership characteristics.

There are many ways that you can approach this essay, but here are two that Riley talked about:

Or here is another one:

If you have a different way of organizing your essay, feel free to use it. These are training wheels – if you don’t need the training wheels, feel free to ride that bicycle all by yourself!

The last thing we talked about before we started writing was the formatting of the paper.

When you write your essay, you will need the following:

  • a header
  • a heading
  • doubled spaced
  • indented paragraphs
  • a centered title – this should NOT stand out in any other way other than the centered formatting. No bold, no italics, to underline. Just. The. Title. Centered.
  • a normal font (try Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman)

Remember – if you want to see how this will be graded, check LMS for the rubric.

3/19/2012

Finals are in just a few days!

Because of TAKS last week,  we have to do our last two major grades this week, which means we don’t have time for late work.

The last day for late work will be on Wednesday, March 21st.

Today, we started our lady major grade: the college entrance essay. This can be found in the College Essay folder on LMS. Riley found a large amount of real college entrance essays for you to practice with. It needs to be between 500 – 700 words, double spaced, MLA formatted.

If you need help with an intro, go back to the Pimp My Paper folder and check out the tips there!

First block final exam is Thursday and second and third finals are on Friday.

Do you know what a hooptie is? Well, you do now! Riley must have watched one too many episodes of Pimp My Ride, because she is telling us that we are going to Pimp our Papers!

Remember on Friday she told us to take our paragraph “nuggets” and put them all into one word document in order? Well, that’s our paper! It’s ok. It probabaly doesn’t look like much of a paper right now, but we are going to turn this Pinto into a Cadillac!

Today, we pimped it out by looking at our organization, our thesis sentence, and lastly, our rhetorical strategies.

Make sure that you are TRACKING YOUR CHANGES in WORD. Riley will be looking at your tracked changes on Friday. There is a DROP BOX JUST FOR TRACKED CHANGES.

Remember – she expects everyone to start out with a hooptie and then turn it into a Cadillac. The tracked changes SHOW that process, much like Pimp My Ride shows the PROCESS of fixing the car up.
