I am so excited by the conversations and conferences that is happening in 198 today. TEACHER HAPPY DANCE!

I noticed a few things when skimming Google Docs this morning:

  1. Make sure you are writing on MY Google Doc so that I can see your daily progress.
  2. Make sure that your thesis is specific enough to fully answer the prompt and not just restate the prompt.

If you need help with writing a succint yet specific thesis, I have a file of template thesis sentences for literary analysis for you to look at in Schoology.

1/24/23

We are starting our essay today! Make sure that you READ and understand the parameters of the assignment.

A few important reminders: Write on my Google Doc. I will be looking at your process, so if you copy/paste from another source, I won’t be able to see that.

A lot of the choices regarding the essay are up to you: your structure and how much evidence you put in. This is intentional. I know you aren’t used to this, but this is an expectation in collegiate level writing.

I am going to hop on the documents before class starts tomorrow to give quick feedback for those who have soemething written down.

Please make sure you a confident and comfortable with the task before the weekend hits. The TurnItIn due date is on Sunday and 11:59 and the Schoology/Google Doc due date is 1/31.

Hooray! The English IV teachers found out today that we can and will proceed with the Synthesis or Multi-Perspective Essay. That means we didn’t waste our time! <3 <3 <3

Today, we focused on writing our thesis and generating ideas. We created a graphic organizer to help with this. In the centImage result for graphic organizerer circle, write your thesis.

In the squares around it, I want you think about examples that support your thesis. The more you write now, the easier writing the essay will be on Thursday.

Make sure that your examples support your thesis. For instance, if your thesis is about the idea that technology helps people be more productive, don’t give examples that detract from your thesis. Don’t talk about how technology can be distracting.

When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following:

  • Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question.
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is likely to  be “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
  • Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Happy Birthday, Mordred! Mordred is Arthur’s son/brother that he tried to kill when he was only a baby, but fate could not be denied!

Today, Riley gave us the entire class to work on the script: YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE SCRIPT DONE BY THURSDAY IN ORDER TO PRESENT ON FRIDAY.

Let me repeat: YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE SCRIPT WRITTEN AND TURNED IN ON THURSDAY IN ORDER TO PRESENT ON FRIDAY.

The script is a major writing grade and the presentation is a major project grade. There is no make up for the presentation.

If you are going to attend the field trip to the courts on Thursday, plan on staying after to finish the movie.

It’s February! Isn’t that a funny word – most people mispronounce it – including the Captain.

Today, we started our first Major Writing Grade – the Beo-Boast. There is a pre-writing assignment associated with this in LMS – just go to the drop box and list a few things for each category. Use Riley’s as an example.

The Beo-Boast instructions are in LMS, as well. It’s not that long, but don’t freak out about writing your first draft with kennings and alliteration. That comes in with your REVISING! Make sure you turn this is ASAP so that you won’t have a zero for the progress report next week.

Remember – it’s ok to boast and exagerrate in this assignment.

We started out the class by brainstorming the following chart:

Things I’m Good At Accomplishments Past Conflicts/

Struggles

Where I Come From My Goals
•Teaching
•Reading
•Being Weird
• Awards
• Sleepy students
• Lazy students
• Boring textbooks
•St. Louis
•Larsons (Mom)
•Millers (Dad)
• Open my own schools
•For you to learn something and pass my class!

We then started the Beo-Boast. Instructions and examples are located in LMS. In order tomake sure you have the caesuras down, make sure you use lots of commas, and write the boast in the same style of Beowulf. Don’t write sentences in paragraphs.

Don’t worry about the kennings and the alliteration at first – it’s easier to go back and edit those in.

Be creative! Have fun! BOAST!
