8/21/17 (Level)

First day jitters? No way! I hope that your first day was great! I was so excited to meet you all, even though there were a few more cell phones and sleepers than I would have liked on the first day. But we’ll get there!

The struggle for me as a teacher is how to cover all the required topics: dress code, parking, bus behavior, all while still trying to be engaging and getting to know you.

So, this is what we talked about each class period:

1st Period

  • How to read the schedule
  • 6 minutes between each class period
  • There are no AGR cards this year because we have online registration now (AOR)
  • All requests for early dismissal are handled before school in the attendance office
  • All notes regarding absences are to be turned in directly to the attendance office.

2nd Period

  • I passed out KISD forms. Please sign and return to 2nd period
    • Clinic Emergency Card
    • Insurance forms.
    • Free/Reduced Lunch online information
    • Migrant Form-(cow)
    • “Wise – Up” parent letter
  • Note: There are no AGR registration cards this year because KISD has moved to annual online registration (AOR) this year.
  • Early dismissals, doctor’s notes, court notes, and written excuses are to be turned in to the attendance office before school.
  • Once a student has arrived on campus, no student is permitted to leave the Klein Oak campus during the school day without an approved early dismissal. Any student leaving campus must sign out in the attendance office before he leaves regardless of his location in the building at the time of the early dismissal.
  • Any student arriving to school after 7:40 AM must go to the attendance office to sign in.
  • Parents need to call the attendance office when a student is absent. Students are to bring a note to the attendance office the following day to excuse the absence.

3rd Period

  • We reviewed the dress code policy in the student handbook (pages 46-47).
  • We reviewed the section of the student handbook related to Pointers, Portable Music Devices, Cameras, Handheld Computers, Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices (pages 52-53) Inform students of the new KO procedures with the red, yellow and green cards.

4th Period

  • I explained cafeteria information as detailed below. Ask students to check their schedule for 4th and 5th period only. The letter following the students 4th or 5th period room assignment denotes the lunch that student is to attend. For example, if the student is in room 287B during 5th period, he or she will go to B lunch. If there is no letter then the student will go to B lunch. Go over which courses in fourth and fifth period go to which lunch periods. Look at the bell schedule for clarification.
  • Cash money may be deposited in a student’s lunch account using one of the three net cash machines which are located in the commons. Student lunch accounts can also be paid online using the Klein Oak webpage.
  • Students must use their ID number to purchase lunch. Once distributed, all students will be required to use their ID to purchase lunches.  Emphasize to the students that they must not share their ID or PIN with anyone else.
  • Students are responsible for throwing away the trash on their table. It takes a team effort to keep our school clean.
  • The vending machines and food lines will be off limits when the bell rings to return to class.
  • Students have four (4) minutes between lunch periods.
  • Reminder: no bottled drinks except water, candy, food, etc., will be allowed in the building outside of the cafeteria. Klein Oak is a closed campus and that visitors are not allowed on the campus unless they are approved by the administration. Students may not have guests eat lunch with them unless they are a guardian.
  • Students can locate the bus lists on the cafeteria windows during lunch to find the correct bus number and lane.

5th Period

  • We discussed that they should never be in the hallway, during the school day without a pass from a teacher.
  • We reviewed the sections of the student handbook pertaining to Bullying (page 49-50) and Dishonesty in School Work (page 51) with students.
  • We went over Klein Oak Honor Code statement at this time. “I affirm that I have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this assignment.”

6th Period

  • Any and all prescribed medication is to be kept in the original container and taken to the clinic. All medication must be brought to the school by a parent or guardian. Students may not bring and/or carry prescription medication with them at any time.
  • Students were reminded to never accept or consume any item that could be mistaken for a drug. Students should never use someone else’s medication.
  • We talked about the section in the student handbook pertaining to possession of tobacco (page 54) and the section on use and possession of alcohol, controlled substances, dangerous drugs, inhalants, narcotics and/or marijuana by students (page 64-65).
  • Students that they are not to trespass on the Hildebrandt, Northampton, Krimmel, or any other campuses.

7th Period

  • Review the transportation section on page 32-34 of the student handbook. Review pages 53-54 about parking lot information for students who drive.
  • I reminded students that at the end of the day, they need to go directly to their bus or automobiles, unless they are involved in a school sponsored extracurricular activity, immediately after school. Once buses start moving, they will not be stopped.
  • Vending machines are off limits after school unless students are staying for an extracurricular activity. Students are not to carry drinks out to the buses.
  • Last reminder: Clinic Emergency cards, insurance forms, migrant form, free or reduced lunch online information sheet home for signatures and completion. Everything that needs signing should be returned to the second period teacher tomorrow.
  • Bring schedules back to school tomorrow

See why the first day can be a challenge?

Our big activity for the day was Creative Coloring: each student was given a marker and as group, had to draw a picture for me. A picture? In English class? Sometimes, I ask you to do things that may seem a little… weird at first. You may wonder why I ask you to do something. Trust me on this. We’ll be talking about these pictures tomorrow and next week.

I am going to put all of the pictures I took in Schoology for your enjoyment.

Lastly, I went over my syllabus. Yes, I did assign parent homework, but I promise it’s fairly easy (and won’t be due for a long time.

See why the first day can be a challenge?

Then, I did a quick little activity I call Numbers. Again, you may be wondering why we are working with numbers if this is an English class. Trust me.

I explained we had a list of number from 1 – 96. You had one minute to circle as many numbers as you can: in numerical order! No shortcuts or creative thinking on this one: I seriously wanted you to find the one and circle. Then find the two and circle. Then find the three. You get the idea.

I think the highest anyone got was 25. Good, but not great. We only had a minute, and during this time, I was not helpful at all. I increased anxiety by constantly yelling out the time, snarkily telling students that they already should have learned their numbers, yelled at people to stop talking, and was just generally unhelpful.

I showed all of my students the pattern (some of you figured it out on your own!) and then we did the whole thing over again – except this time, I gave you a sheet with the grid that showed you the quadrants and the pattern. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU GOT MORE THAN THE FIRST TIME AROUND! Why? Because I showed you the trick. So why did we do this? Because you guys can already write a paper. You are already accomplished English students. My goal is to help you increase your skills (and ultimately your AP score). I’m going to do this not by drill and kill (though there is a time and a place for practice tests, and I want to spread them out over the year – brain research that cramming for a test is counterproductive).

Our big activity for the day was Creative Coloring: each student was given a marker and as group, had to draw a picture for me. A picture? In English class? Lastly, I went over my syllabus. Yes, I did assign parent homework, but I promise it’s fairly easy (and won’t be due for a long time. You need to get How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Othello, and Pygmalion ASAP. Honestly, they are all fairly easy reads, but then again, it’s easy for me to say that: I like them all.

3/21/2016

It’s Term 4! That means we have ten weeks of school left before we get our for the summer holidays! Hooray!

We did a group activity called Creative Coloring and then wrote a response to it. If you weren’t here, go to First Day activities and then Creative Coloring Response and the answer the questions as best as you can about group work in general, focusing on how attendance affects group work, maybe even giving a personal anecdote (story) about how you have been personally affected by it in class.

Then, we hopped over to Carpe Diem > Bucket List and did the 48 Hours e-mail.

48 hours email

You can just e-mail me a list with what you want to do. :)

Here’s my list:

  • Eat all of my favorite foods
  • Spend time with my family
  • Skype with loved ones who are not local
  • Write letters to my children for special events
  • Try to stay calm: meditate, acupuncture

Afterwards, We read the Top Five Regrets of the Dying and talked about hospice care and which regret you thought was the most meaningful. We ran out of time, so we’ll start tomorrow off with the Cubing Activity.

1/20/2015 – B

welcome-back-to-vf1zk7Welcome to the first day of term 3! We have a nice mix of returning students, new students, and even Saydi is back! Yay!

This is a really easy way to catch up on what we did in class yesterday (or any day, for that matter). Just make sure that you are looking at the blog post for the B class since I’m also teaching the A part of the class at the same time.

We started today off with a brief welcome! A few things about myself – yes, I am pregnant and expecting boy/girl twins in May. I do things a little differently than a typical English teacher – I’m not afraid of looking like a dork if it’s going to help you remember material. We work in this class everyday, but it’s generally not hard work. I usually don’t freak out over cell phones unless you are spending more time on your cell phone than your actual class work OR if you are on your cell phone while I am directly teaching.

We signed up for Dyknow as well. I use it more for an educational tool than a babysitting tool, but I still use it. 🙂

levels

I did explain a few key differences of my class: namely, that I am on a point system. There most points you can earn for the term is 1500 points. That means that if you have 1500 points at the end of the term, you will have earned 100%. If you earn 1300/1500 points, you’ll have earned a 90, 1200 points earns an 80, 1100 points is a 73, and 1050 points is a 70.Levels

The first thing we did on Day One was create to characters for The Pride of Riley. The things that I’ll be focusing on when I grade them are your Nature, Demeanor, Attributes, and your (4) R’s. If you weren’t here, you can find this material in BB under Welcome to the Ship: First Day Stuff: Gamification.

The big things that I will be grading are your Nature and Demeanor, your Attributes (7/5/3), and your R’s. Remember the nuggets are your learning objectives!

We then did the First Day Survey. You can find that in BB, but the link can also be found here.

Lastly, you guys drew me a picture for my belated birthday present! We ran out of time to get the reflection questions done, but we’ll start class with that tomorrow. Bryan, that means the only thing you’ll need to do on your own are the character sheet and the First Day Survey.

10/27/2014

Ahoy! The Captain is back from being quarantined for the last few weeks! No worries, I am ebola-free, so you can’t blame me if you get sick.

Today (Monday) marks the first day of a new term, a term in which you can exempt my final exam in January.

exemptionFirst block, pay particular attention to the fact that tardies for Vistas Visits count against you for block 1. Jayla and Jessica! I want the entire class to be exempt! If you mess that up because of attendance, I will write the hardest finale ever in the history of Vistas!

So. Back to what we did on Monday.

We jumped over to out first unit: Carpe Diem. We read the Top Five Regrets of the Dying and talked about hospice care and which regret you thought was the most meaningful.

Then, we watched the trailer for The Bucket List and I cried.

Tomorrow, we will be writing our OWN bucket lists, and I mentioned the most common item on my students’ lists is skydiving. So then I impressed everyone with this video – make sure you check out the super cool helmet (?) that I’m wearing and how goofy I look when I am actually jumping out of the plane.

Then, we answered the Deep Questions. I”ll be looking at your DEEP thoughts about this rather than complete sentences, so focus on that. This should take some time to complete, so if you get done in three minutes, you probably didn’t do it correctly.

See you tomorrow and be ready to start writing your very own BucketList!

8.25.14 – B

Welcome to Vistas! This first day of school was pretty uneventful, but I’m excited for all of my classes. It may take me a little bit to get all of your names, but just bear with me. Especially if I have already messed up your name.

Today, we only worked on the character sheet and did normal first day activities. If you missed today, this is the first grade in the gradebook. You can get a Character Sheet from me. You will need to fill in the following:

  • Name
  • Nature
  • Deameanor
  • the 4 R’s (Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, Rigor)

To fill in your Nature and Demeanor, go First Day Stuff in Blackboard. Find the list of Nature and Demeanor Archetypes. Read through them. Find one that is your TRUE SELF – your NATURE. This is the CORE of your being, it never changes. People may not always SEE it, but this is who you truly are.

You demeanor is the mask you wear. You will find there are lots of masks you wear – choose the one you most often wear at school.

For example, my nature is Architect and my demeanor is Jester.

The the four R’s, you have 10 dots to spread among the four categories, YOU CAN ONLY USE TEN DOTS – NO MORE. This may be confusing, so either ask me or ask a classmate if this isn’t making sense.

We then did the First Day survey – this can also be found in the First Day folder on Blackboard.

We were able to get the first part of Creative Coloring done (we drew the pictures), but we are going to have to finish the response tomorrow.

Please note that I am teaching an A and a B section at the same time, so don’t assume that all of these posts apply to you.

3/31/14

Welcome to Term 3

If this is your first time on board, welcome! If you are a returning member, I’m glad to have you back! :)

After that, we did Creative Coloring and the discussion board to go along with it. If you weren’t here, do the best you can answering the questions over group work, but you should focus on the fact that you were absent and how absences affect group and partner work.

First Block was able to get a little more work done because we didn’t have Vistas Visits, but the rest of my classes stopped there.

We then talked a little bit about The Buried Life and the book that resulted from the tv show. The trailer was really moving and those of you who hadn’t seen it before were interested in watching the tv show.

Lastly, we talked about what we would do if we only had 48 hours left to live. If you were absent for this, make sure you get a post-it note and write down what you would do. You do not need to put your name on it, but please make sure to keep it school appropriate.

8/27/13 – B

cc2Ahoy! Today, we started out with Creative Coloring and did a discussion board discussing group work. I LOVED my picture, which is currently in the hallway. 🙂creative coloring

After that, we did a show and tell of sorts with adjectives. WE each each chose two words (from a list) that describes us and we gave a short explanation of WHY we chose those words.

Lastly, we started working on the BucketList Prewriting. You can find this in BB in the Carpe Diem unit in the Bucketlist folder.

If you don’t finish the prewriting today, there will be some time tomorrow to finish it. 🙂

4/1/2013

Welcome to Term 4!

We have ten weeks in this term, so let’s make the most of it!

Today was pretty ding dang simple. We created character sheets (focus on the nature/demeanor and the R’s). For the nature and demeanor, look at the list in LMS – choose ONE that describes you at your most basic – who you REALLY really are. Your demeanor is the mask you wear here at school, what you present to the world. You may find that you see lots that describe you in different situations – choose your nature as the true you, and choose the demeanor that you use here at school most of the time.

We also did the First Day Survey.

Creative Coloring is an activity that we did as a group – if you missed out on this one, you’ll have to do some dinky make up grade since you missed the whole point of the group work. For those who WERE here, we drew a picture and then answered some questions in the discussion board. GIGO!

Lastly, we answered What You Heard, What You Know in LMS. It’s pretty simple – if you are a new student, write down one thing that you heard about Riley or her class. If you have had Riley before, write down one thing you learned from her – you can either do this as a new post or as a comment to another student’ post.
