We finished Beowulf today: The Farewell. Things we discussed in detail

  • Beowulf’s dying request was the tower, so that people could remember him
  • He was cremated and buried with the treasure
  • The monks tried to compare him to Jesus, but we poo-pooed that idea. Beowulf isn’t MILD. He’s not a Ghost Chile Pepper, but he’s definitely at least a jalapeno. Most people said that I was MILD because I’m not mean, but don’t equate MILD with NICE. Once we got over that misconception, most classes decided that I was around US grade police pepper spray.
  • Then, I gave you time to work on the Beo-Boast. Remember, you have to highlight and identify the required poetic elements.

The Boast is due tonight at 11:59 pm! GET. IT. IN!

The question of the day was “What are the advantages of being old”? Some people said it was the senior citizen discount, a few said respect, others said that it was you could be a grumpy old person and not care what people think, and still others said retirement! While all of those responses are perfectly valid, I was looking for wisdom or experience.

Beowulf is like Huff in Secondhand Lions. He’s old, but still effective and quite powerful.

Today, we read The Last Battle (sniff) and parts of the The Spoils. We will finish Beowulf tomorrow and you’ll have the rest of the time to finish up your boast.

Remember – make sure you color code your boast and do the reflection survey in order to earn all points possible.

Ms. Miller and I stayed after today (it’s currently 3:53!) and no one showed up for help, so I hope this means that everyone is going to turn this in on time!

9/1/2016

It’s the first day of September! Holla!

So today, we looked back at what we did yesterday and talked about the difference between BOASTING and BRAGGING.

Afterwards, we started our first major grade for this 6 weeks: The Beo-Boast! The instructions are in Blackboard in the Beo-Boast folder, along with one of Beowulf’s boasts, a boast that someone wrote about Donald Trump, and a boast that I wrote about myself. I also put in boasts from two former students: Amber and Mayra. Amber has a great vocabulary and wrote using antiquated language. She went above and beyond what I asked. Mayra had a great, original opening and used good vocabulary, but this might be a little more accessible to you.

I also showed you guys how I organized MY poem, and then I gave you a simple outline of what you could do if you were struggling with your boast.

Here is what I drew on the board for you –

Another idea that you can use instead of a threat is a promise – a promise to your future or your enemies.

The one in black is MY structure and the one in brown is a suggested one (follow this form to boast about what you overcame as a student, all the changes that you’ve made during your time at Klein Oak, and then what goals you have (graduation and/or career goals).

9/8/15 – A

Ahoy, mateys! Today, we started off class by filling out the What I’m Good At table. You can find this BB > Beowulf > Beo-Boast. Don’t worry about complete sentences – you can just list.

boast prewriting

This is mine. You can write yours either in a Word document and turn that in, or you can just write your notes in the Comment section of the drop bop.

Then, we read The Coming of Beowulf. Remember, I gave you MY copy with notes so that you could attention and follow, not so you could zone out. We never read for all 80 minutes and we take lots of connection breaks, so when we are reading, I need you to be with me. It’s the Riley Show!

Today, we read about Grendel’s Mother. And I got to show off my EPIC pencil – so AWESOME that no ordinary student can write with it!

Things we talked about:

  • how long a Navy Seal can hold his breath
  • I was wrong! From what I read, ALL Navy Seals have to be men
  • Beowulf’s will
  • Hrothgar’s gift giving
  • Beowulf’s focus on his people (if he dies)
  • Why Beowulf is so focused on fame
  • Unferth’s wergild (Hrunting)
  • Beowulf’s numerous failures
  • loyalty of the Geats

Then, I gave you time to work. You had about an hour. If you did not turn in your Beo-Boast, that should be your priority since progress reports come out tomorrow. If that was turned in, then go ahead and get started on your Metaphorical Response.

We will have about 1/2 the day on Wednesday to work on it in class, and after that, you’ll be on your own.

2/7/2014

Today,we did a light yellow Post-It and read The Battle with Grendel’s Mother. If you weren’t here, make sure you get the highlights from the book. The highlights really helps when you are doing the Metaphorical Response.

After we read, you have about an hour to work on assignments.

Fair warning: I have a doctor’s appointment today, so I’ll be leaving campus around 1:15. You can still turn work AFTER this and you can still stay after school to get assignments in, but I won’t be here.

If you turn in work over the weekend, it won’t be counted late.

Make sure that you are finding QUOTES for your Metaphorical Response, not just summaries of what happened. A few people are leaving out the pages numbers, so make you you put those in for full credit.

Progress Reports come out on Tuesday! Whatever grade you have Monday morning is what will be printed!

Have a good weekend and keep your fingers crossed that I’m not sick on Monday! 🙂

2/6/14

Today, we read The Battle with Grendel and The Monsters’ Lair. If you missed this, please make sure that you get the highlights from the Yellow Folder.

Beowulf NotesWe also created a question for each of the two headings –

The Battle with Grendel is on the BRIGHT YELLOW post-it and The  Monsters’ Lair is on the ORANGE post-it.

Then, instead of making you guys work on Sell This Swamp (which my classes usually do), I decided to be nice and exclude this assignment, and that gives you guys time to work on your Beo-Boast and/or your Metaphorical Response (this is the third day that I have given to you to work on the MR).

These are both major grades and will be due tomorrow at the end of the school day. Remember – progress reports will be printed on Monday morning, so if you don’t want a zero for a major grade (or two), you’ll need to turn these assignments in. If you turn something in over the weekend AFTER I’ve graded, just let me know on Monday and I can take the zero away for the progress report.

2/1/2011

It’s February! Isn’t that a funny word – most people mispronounce it – including the Captain.

Today, we started our first Major Writing Grade – the Beo-Boast. There is a pre-writing assignment associated with this in LMS – just go to the drop box and list a few things for each category. Use Riley’s as an example.

The Beo-Boast instructions are in LMS, as well. It’s not that long, but don’t freak out about writing your first draft with kennings and alliteration. That comes in with your REVISING! Make sure you turn this is ASAP so that you won’t have a zero for the progress report next week.

Remember – it’s ok to boast and exagerrate in this assignment.
