Everything we did today can be found in BB under Beowulf >Literary Elements. We did three assignments today: alliteration sentence, caesuras magnet card, and kennings.

We started out by doing a word search – Riley gave us a picture from the book Animalia and a sheet with  a letter on it. If you have the letter A, write as many A letters down inside the letter that you can.

So, you can see from this picture that there are a whole bunch of A’s in here. Write them down inside your letter.

So, if you were absent and need a letter, choose one of the following:

Or you can choose this one:

To go get the letter, go to BB>Beowulf>Literary Terms> Drop Box: Alliterative sentence to find the PDF file of either C or P. Print it out and start writing down words!

When you are done with that, you will then a ten word alliterative sentence. If you have C, you are going to write ONE sentence that MAKES SENSE that has AT LEAST TEN (school appropriate) C WORDS. If you have P, you are going to write ONE sentence that MAKES SENSE that has AT LEAST TEN (school appropriate) P WORDS. Write this sentence around your letter.

Think of it this way: start out with a base sentence, like:

Ellen Eves entered the east entrance.

That’s only five E words, so I need to add more.

Think of and adjective for Ellen, like this:

Energetic Ellen Eves entered the east entrance.

Look at your VERB. Think of an adverb that can describe it.

Energetic Ellen Eves eagerly entered the east entrance.

Still short? Try adding adjectives such as colors and numbers.

Energetic Ellen Eves eagerly entered the east entrance eight times.

Energetic Ellen Eves, when she was only eighteen, eagerly entered the east entrance eight times.

Nine Words! This is  where I suggest going to the dictionary to find an E word that you can incorporate and using PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES.

Energetic Ellen Eves, when she was only eighteen, eagerly entered the east entrance eight times with an entourage after the examination.

Then, we listened to The Breaks and watched Riley dance crazily around the room. You kinda missed the show here, but she was demonstrating caesuras.

What you need to do is on an index card, write caesuras on the front, and then write the following four words around it in the four corners: pause, suspense, comma, break.

On the back of the card, write a definition for caesuras using those four words. Ask a crew member for help if you need it. :)

Then, we worked on kennings. A kenning is pretty much just a fancy nickname. The Anglo-Saxons used them, so to understand the bards, we need a little nickname practice. Go to the Beowulf vocabulary folder in BB and find The Kennings and Memes assignment. If you look at Animal Kennings powerpoint, you’ll see memes that other people did about animals. Note they focus on what the animal LOOKS like or DOES.

trash panda

MAKE sure that you are using a COMPOUND NICKNAME. You have to be to replace “Look at that raccoon” with “Look at that TRASH PANDA“.

Also, remember that Ms. Gras is completely terrified of mice! >:)

1/12/16 – B

We read Sarah Silvia Cynthia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out and did hexagonal writing graphic organizer together as a class.

We cut out all the triangles and I had to spend some correcting people. Shoes were thrown!!!

We were supposed to read a carpe diem poem, but we ran out of time. 🙁 Sad face.

I won’t be here tomorrow because I’ll be at an EOC workshop. We’ll be doing an easy collage assignment over Care Diem, YOLO, and Memento Mori.

1/12/2016

Today, we started off watching the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny and I asked each one of you to ponder a specific questions as we watched:

  • Who are the epic people featured in the video?
  • What are the “valorous deeds” that have been accomplished?
  • What are some examples of the supernatural?

If you weren’t here for this, you can do this in Blackboard. I may have to play the video for you if you can’t get to You Tube on your phone.

We then took notes over what an epic is and specifically, what an Epic HERO is. We spent a lot of time talking about the VALUES of an EPIC HERO.

epic1epic2

We then worked on the Epic Dude. Using our notes, find an epic hero and fill out the template. If you need to see examples, I have some in class that you can see. :)

Sentence 1: Describe the person.

Sentence 2: What was/is his/her quest? What was the overarching goal?

Sentence 3: What are the brave events that he/she did? These are the things that helps the hero reach the quest.

Sentence 4: Who does he/she get help from?

Sentence 5: What was the setting that all of this occurred in? What’s the history?

I want you to use a REAL PERSON for this – not a character from television or movies. If you need help finding a person, search for heroes in history. I found loads of web pages with lists of people.

I reviewed my PB&J cards with everyone today. I even sent you all a picture of them!

riley pbj review

We took a group quiz – the wergild quiz. Sadly, no one even asked me what wergild meant! I’ll have to teach that to you tomorrow.

The quiz is open group, open note, open poster. The only thing is that I’m asking you not to do is use the Internet to find your answers. If you don’t like your grade, you can go back and retake it using the internet for full credit. I just want to see what you can do with the material that was used in school.

Fate Free Will

With the Quote Sort, You need to find the definition of Fate and Free Will. Then, move each quote over to column that you think it fits under. I promise that this is harder than it looks. There are some quotes that will make your brain hurt. This is why I encourage you to talk them out with your table buddies. Just because a quote has the word FATE in it doesn’t mean it belongs in the FATE column.

I also had all grades updated today, so if there is something that I need to fix, send me an e-mail!

I sent everyone a PowerPoint about Carpe Diem, Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, Memento Mori, and YOLO today. We translated the passage from Horace (where we get the expression carpe diem from). You can use this on the final exam if you still have it in ten weeks.

The last page of the PowerPoint is a foldable. You will read the four sentences, and then translate each sentence in your own thought. Add some clip art. I explained what it mean to strain the wine by showing a snippet from a video about pruno. I also serenaded the class to Doris Day’s song Que Sera Sera. Apparently, the entire school heard my song to you.

Make sure you have clip art! You may need to resize the font. Then cut thusly:

And then fold/glue.

Afterwards, we created an account on Bucket List. I won’t be able to access your account information, so remember your username and password, please!

Here is my account that you can look at. You can see that I have goals that I want to do, and things that I have done.

I want you to create a bucket list of things that YOU want to do before you die. Focus on meaningful things that you want to do, not just cool things. I know, it’s hard NOT to put those cool things on your list when you see them, but just think about things that you’d regret if you didn’t do them.

I’m looking for ten cool things and ten meaningful things for a total list of 20 items.

1/8/2015 – A

We finished doing Peanut Butter Jelly Time today! I have to say First Block that I have NEVER had a class that worked so diligently on this as you guys did today. I really mean it. Block 2, I sent you all a video that I made earlier in the year for a review from when I was absent. You can watch it over the weekend if you’d like, but I will be going over MY pictures on Monday before our quiz.

Afterwards, we did a Gallery Walk. That means in YOUR group, ONE person stayed with the poster to teach the students from the other groups and the rest of the group wandered over to the OTHER groups to hear. There are a few reasons we did the Gallery Walk, even though a few people found it repetitive.

  1. It *is* repetitive – the more you hear it, the more likely you’ll remember it for the quiz.
  2. If you had a group member who didn’t do a very good job, this gives you opportunity to fill in the gaps from the other groups.
  3. If gives you the opportunity to see how other people interpreted the information. Greg did a great job with this – I have never seen the pictures he drew to represent the facts from his passages.

Then, we talked about geography for a bit. If you missed today, go to Beowulf < Peanut Butter Jelly Time, to see a blank copy of the map. You can print this out and fill it in. Here is a completed map:

Map of British Isles

If you fill this map out, you can use it on the final exam. There are about 5 final exam questions just over this map! So keep this in your folder. Remember: anything we do in class can be used on the final exam!

Remember – your middle finger is for Ireland !

1/7/15 – B

The very first thing that we did today was the 48 Hours e-mail.

48 hours email

You can just e-mail me a list with what you want to do. :)

Here’s my list:

  • Eat all of my favorite foods
  • Spend time with my family
  • Skype with loved ones who are not local
  • Write letters to my children for special events
  • Try to stay calm: meditate, acupuncture

Then, we read The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. We talked about hospice care and regret. We then cubed regret by answering these 6 questions:

regret

We watched the trailer for The Buried Life and watched a TED talk. During the TED Talk, one of the speakers mentioned that he thinks death is a taboo subject, we we brainstormed ideas about that.

taboo death

Afterwards, we created an account on Bucket List. I won’t be able to access your account information, so remember your username and password, please!

Here is my account that you can look at. You can see that I have goals that I want to do, and things that I have done.

I want you to create a bucket list of things that YOU want to do before you die. Focus on meaningful things that you want to do, not just cool things. I know, it’s hard NOT to put those cool things on your list when you see them, but just think about things that you’d regret if you didn’t do them.

1/7/15 – A

Using the character sheets that you did yesterday, I put you in groups based on your personalities.

pbj groups

If you were missing a group member, I took over for that person so your group wouldn’t suffer. I know, I know. I’m awesome. 🙂

If you weren’t here, go to Blackboard > Beowulf > Peanut Butter Jelly Time and print the Anglo-Saxon History text to OneNote.

pbj text

We are not going to read this all individually ourselves, we are going to split up the work within our group. The sections you are responsible for are listed on the back of your Peanut Butter and Jelly card.

The Sections

Peanut

Celtic Heroes and Heroines in a Magical World

The Romans: The Great Administrators

The Anglo-Saxons Sweep Ashore

Butter:

Women

Anglo-Saxon Life: The Warm Hall, The Cold World

The Anglo-Saxon Religion Religion: Gods for Warriors

Jelly:

The Bards: Singing of Gods and Heros

A Light From Ireland

Jennifer, you are doing Peanut (pages 6-9). Maria and Greg, you are doing Butter (6-9).

Read your sections, highlighting what you think are the important notes. If you need help or just want to double check to make sure that you got the best information, call me over so I can double check it.

Once you have read all of your sections, then you can DRAW your notes. You will draw each section on an index card for a total of three index cards.

Here is the one that I have already done for all groups:

PBJ SingleJust like I taught the class what each one of these pictures meant, tomorrow, you will teach your groups members the information, make a poster, and take a group test over the information (using your notes and text).
