Don’t think you’re getting off easy just because Riley’s not here: today is a “shut up and work day.” We have three large assignments to be working on.

Priority is Metaphorical Response: we have been working on this since Tuesday. It’s due today, Riley will grade this over the weekend. GET THIS IN FIRST.

Then, work on answering the interview questions from yesterday. Remember to make sure that you are answering the quetsions fully and that the answers sound realistic and conversational.

IV – 9/13/2012

We finished Beowulf today – the funeral.

We started on the Rolling Stone Interview. Instructions are in LMS. Look at the examples (fruit) of real Rolling Stone interviews to get an idea of what we are aiming for.

Two things due today: 20 Questions and the intro paragraph.

  • 20 questions – don’t just ask simple questions – ask questions that can show characterization, insight, and knowledge of the time period. For example, “What’s your favorite sport” is on the lame side, while “What is your most embarrassing moment?” is better. Don’t just ask yes or no questions – ask questions that lead into a story, a lecture, or an explanation.
  • For the introduction, spend a lot of time describing the place you are interviewing your character and describe what you character looks like. Focus on sensory details: smell, sight, sound, touch, taste. If you need help, Azley in 2nd did a good one. Mariah in 3rd block is pretty confident, as well.

IV – 9/12/2012

Beowulf is an old man. We watched a clip from Secondhand Lions to understand that just because he’s old, that doesn’t mean that he is weak.

We read “The Last Battle” and “The Spoils” and we worked on the Metaphorical Response.

Remember – choose METAPHORS – that means objects that are UNLIKE the thing you are describing. Don’t say that Grendel is like a monster because he IS a monster. Think of the following comparisons:

  • car
  • plant
  • bodily function
  • food/soda/drink
  • machine
  • medical condition/disease
  • article of clothing
  • school/office supply
  • weather condition
  • Weapon
  • Toiletry

III – 9/12/2012

Today, we read a short story about a Major sending off Indian children to a boarding school. We discussed how fear means different things to different people, and did an Inspiration document over fear. For the following ten people/things, choose a clip art to represent them and in a bubble underneath, say what they are scared of.

  • Teacher
  • Baby
  • Fish
  • Pregnant woman
  • Murderer
  • Your choice
  • Your choice
  • Your choice
  • Your choice
  • Your choice

Then, we did an easy foldable: Under the Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God section, describe and draw a picture of what people were fearful of in that sermon, under the Train section, describe and draw a picture of what people were fearful of in that story, and under the you section, describe and draw a picture of what you are scared of.
