IV – 9/11/2012

Today, we started class with a word prediction. There is also a PDF with the words in LMS – in the drop box, write a one sentence prediction of what you think is going to happen today.

We then read The Monster’s Lair and the Battle with Grendel’s Mother.

Then, we took on the role as a real estate agent and wrote a listing for Grendel’s Mother’s swamp. Make it positive! Try to find at least 4-5 things from the text that you can spin to a positive for potential buyers. Remember – you get a comission from this listing, so make it good!

Afterwards, we worked on the Metaphorical Response. Please make sure that if you have questions, look at the examples, the drop box, and talk to Riley. The hard part is just thinking of bizarre things.

Also, Riley leveled people – so if you weren’t here, you need to get your pirate booty!

III – 9/11/2012

Today, we read and annotated “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” You’ll need to read this on your own and answer the questions on the side of the sermon in order to get credit for the reading.

Afterwards, we identified language that was used to scare or intimidate people.

Lastly, we did the Angry Hand outline. For each finger, identify the following in a sentence:

  • What was Jonathan Edwards’ purpose in writing this sermon? What was his goal?
  • What is the tone of the sermon – wht is Jonathan Edwards’ attitude toward the sermon and his readers?
  • What was the mood of the Puritans who read this at the time? How did Puritans feel when they heard this sermon?
  • What is the mood for modern readers? How do modern audiences feel when they read this sermon?
  • What the is theme? A theme is the central topic or idea the author is trying to point out.

You will also illustrate the hand – think of it this way: If you were creating a book cover for this sermon, what would your book cover be? What colors would you use? What symbols?
