Today, we read about Grendel’s Mother. And I got to show off my EPIC pencil – so AWESOME that no ordinary student can write with it!

Things we talked about:

  • how long a Navy Seal can hold his breath
  • I was wrong! From what I read, ALL Navy Seals have to be men
  • Beowulf’s will
  • Hrothgar’s gift giving
  • Beowulf’s focus on his people (if he dies)
  • Why Beowulf is so focused on fame
  • Unferth’s wergild (Hrunting)
  • Beowulf’s numerous failures
  • loyalty of the Geats

Then, I gave you time to work. You had about an hour. If you did not turn in your Beo-Boast, that should be your priority since progress reports come out tomorrow. If that was turned in, then go ahead and get started on your Metaphorical Response.

2/7/2014

Today,we did a light yellow Post-It and read The Battle with Grendel’s Mother. If you weren’t here, make sure you get the highlights from the book.Β The highlights really helps when you are doing the Metaphorical Response.

After we read, you have about an hour to work on assignments.

Fair warning: I have a doctor’s appointment today, so I’ll be leaving campus around 1:15. You can still turn work AFTER this and you can still stay after school to get assignments in, but I won’t be here.

If you turn in work over the weekend, it won’t be counted late.

Make sure that you are finding QUOTES for your Metaphorical Response, not just summaries of what happened. A few people are leaving out the pages numbers, so make you you put those in for full credit.

Progress Reports come out on Tuesday! Whatever grade you have Monday morning is what will be printed!

Have a good weekend and keep your fingers crossed that I’m not sick on Monday! πŸ™‚

We finished the prologue today – and we had a few people sing some songs together. In first block, Carlos and Tanner were wonderful singers. In second it was Cris and Aaron. Third block singers Jordan and Adonnis made a beautiful harmony together!

Thank you singers! πŸ˜‰

After we finished we worked on five short answer questions: You don’t *have* to use the OER format, but it would make things easier if you did.

Make sure that if you turn in any work that you want to get graded before the progress reports that it gets turned in before Monday. My grades are due Monday at 8:00, but if you turn in a major grade on Monday, I will grade that in time for the progress report.

2/12/13

Ahoy! Progress Reports came out today, and boy, is Ekster upset. Historically, Term 3 is where we have our highest failure rate, so this pressure isn’t going to let up. Neither Ekster nor myself want anyone to fail, so you need to mindful of what is going on.

We finished watching The 13th Warrior today, and you even have an opportunity to earn up to 20 extra points by doing the 13th Warrior short answer. You can find this in the Beowulf folder and then in the 13th Warrior folder. Click on the dropbox and you will two questions:

1. How is The 13th Warrior influenced by Beowulf?

2. How has the story changed to appeal to a modern audience?

You can answer only one question, or you can answer both of them.
If you turn in your work before lunch, I’ll change the average on the progress report for you before you show it to Ekster at lunch today.

See how nice I am!

Progress reports came out today, and if you have leveled to a Cabin Boy, you got a share of the booty. Also, if you were passing on the progress report, you were given the chance to choose a SUPER POWER! Remember – The Riley giveth and the Riley taketh away.

After all that noise, we worked on the Beowulf Metaphorical Reponse in LMS. It’s a Word document, and if you look at the Hamlet example, it can show you what she is looking for. Also, check out the rubric to see how she is grading it.

HINT: Choose inanimate objects to be your symbol rather than animals. Also, make sure you aren’t choosing other like objects – a metaphor is a comparison between two UNLIKE things. Beowulf and a frog. Mrs. Ekster and a stick of butter. Vistas High School Program and a watermelon.

Make sure that you have two quotes from Beowulf!

We will finish this tomorrow. πŸ™‚

Pretty easy day today – we took a CCA – Campus Common Assessment. It was only a twenty question multiple choice reading test, and everyone got done early. Riley gave us time to work on missing assignments. How giving and wonderful she is!

Remember, if there is a problem with your grade (it’s graded in LMS but not in Gradespeed, it was graded and returned to you but there isn’t a grade in Gradespeed, or you redid an assignment and the old grade is still there), write down the problem and give it to Riley.

If you just turned in something late and it hasn’t been graded yet, don’t worry about it. Don’t remind Riley to grade your late work: that will only make her cranky.

Here is a picture of Megan, the Captain’s one-eyed cat, giving her input on the Foil Flip Dolls. Christina’s Tigger was Megan’s favorite: paws down!
