Ahoy, landlubbers!

As promised, here are the written instructions for the Obituary Diorama.

First, go to Tagxedo and click create.

diorama1Before you do anything else, click Fonts.

Diorama Step 2From Fonts, Click USE LOCAL FONTS.

Diorama Step 3It should look something like this if you have done it correctly:

Diorama Step 4Exit out by hitting the X in the top right hand corner. You are now ready to add text.

Add text by hitting LOAD and then copying and pasting your ENTIRE obituary in the “Enter Text” location.

Diorama Step 5It will look really short. As long as you copied/pasted your entire text, it will be there. It’s just spread out horizontally. Make sure when you are done that you hit SUBMIT.

Diorama Step 6COLOR: This changes colors in your palette. If you don’t want all BLUES, then you’ll need to click on THEME.

THEME: This changes the theme of your colors. If you want, you can even create your own theme.

FONT: You can respin your fonts to find fonts that you like.

ORIENTATION and LAYOUT: This changes how the words appear on your word cloud.

ALL: This randomized all of those options.

SHAPE: This is where you can change the shape.

So this is what I made mine to look like:

Save as a 16 MP.

Then, download the Diorama template in the Obituary folder. Put your picture in the top section, and then answer the three questions in the bottom section. Make sure your name is on it, and make it pretty.

I will print these in color for you. 🙂

I do not expect these to be done by today, so I’m just making them due NEXT Friday, 11/15.

We then watched the opening scene from Beauty and the Beast and compared/contrasted it with Beauty and the Beat.

We then read and annotate the Passionate Shepherd and The Nymph’s Reply.

Walter Raleigh read that poem and thought it was ridiculous. Kinda like I thought when I first heard Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.” So her wrote a response:

April 4th. It’s my dad’s birthday. I guess I need to call him. Maybe I’ll read the poem from yesterday to him and see how HE likes it!

Today, we read/listened to Let’s Get it On by Marvin Gaye. We talked about the speaker and his audience (a girl) and analyzed that relationship. We highlighted evidence of carpe diem (time) in the poem, highlighted IRONY in the song, and highlighted references to LOVE in the song. We also specifically talked about how the song was contradictory and how it related to TIME (“stop beating ’round the bush”, and “this minute”).

 

Then, we read To His Coy Mistress. Make sure you get the notes from the blog or another student. The poem is a syllogism – a form of deductive reasoning, and it was also very similar to Let’s Get it On.

We create a Venn diagram comparing To His Coy Mistress with Let’s Get it On. I’m grading this based on QUALITY, not QUANTITY. Make sure you focus on significant similarities and differences.

Lastly, we did the Syllogism Pyramid foldable. You can find the template in LMS.

For each triangle, create a text box and write the following:

  • If… (1st stanza – lines 1-20) + image
  • But… (2nd stanza – lines 21-32) + image
  • So… (3rd stanza – lines 33-46) + image

You will need to ROTATE the text box. Grab the little green ball and turn it. Make sure that the text box faces the hypotenuse. Don’t worry about the text that is already on the pyramid – that will be hidden when you fold it up.

IV – 11/14/2012

We read Psalm 23 today – make sure that you get the notes from another student.

Afterwards, we listened/read Gangsta’s Paradise and did the foldable – Folding Venn Diagram. You are are going to compare/contrast Psalm 23 with Gangsta’s Paradise. Make sure you have three differences and three similarities. Print, cut, and fold and turn in to Riley.

We read the Prodigal Son (copy/paste the definition of prodigal into your copy of the text). Get the notes from another classmate. We can easily see the difference between the Bible as Literature and theology with this story.

Riley then explained that tomorrow, we are writing a parable to explain/prove a maxim or a proverb. She has a list of proverbs to choose from, and you need to find a proverb that you like/find insightful, and explain it (in the drop box entitled Maxim for Modern Day Parable).
