8/31/16

We read The Coming of Beowulf today (pages 44-48). You can either read along with my projector, the text in OneNote, or in the textbook.

We talked about Beowulf’s boast, how he is confident, not cocky, and the vocabulary word purge.

Make sure that if you are missing days, that you get caught up. I promise, if you think it’s boring reading Beowulf in class is, it’s going to ten times more boring if you are reading it on your own.

If you are taking or posting pictures of class on social media, please use the hashtag #readwriteriley in order to get gold for Classcraft! You might even see them show up on my blog! 😉

You can find this BB > Beowulf > Beo-Boast. Don’t worry about complete sentences – you can just list.

This is mine. You can write yours either in a Word document and turn that in, or you can just write your notes in the Comment section of the drop bop.

We have had three daily assignments so far, and we are starting our FIRST major grade tomorrow! The Beo-Boast!

9/8/15 – A

Ahoy, mateys! Today, we started off class by filling out the What I’m Good At table. You can find this BB > Beowulf > Beo-Boast. Don’t worry about complete sentences – you can just list.

boast prewriting

This is mine. You can write yours either in a Word document and turn that in, or you can just write your notes in the Comment section of the drop bop.

Then, we read The Coming of Beowulf. Remember, I gave you MY copy with notes so that you could attention and follow, not so you could zone out. We never read for all 80 minutes and we take lots of connection breaks, so when we are reading, I need you to be with me. It’s the Riley Show!

The instructions are in Beo-Boast, along with one of Beowulf’s boasts, a boast that someone wrote about Donald Trump, and a boast that I wrote about myself. I also put in boasts from two former students: Amber and Mayra. Amber has a great vocabulary and wrote using antiquated language. She went above and beyond what I asked. Mayra had a great, original opening and used good vocabulary, but this might be a little more accessible to you.

I also showed you guys how I organized MY poem, and then I gave you a simple outline of what you could do if you were struggling with your boast.

Here is what I drew on the board for you –

 structures

Another idea that you can use instead of a threat is a promise – a promise to your future or your enemies.

The one in black is MY structure and the one in brown is a suggested one (follow this form to boast about what you overcame at your home campus, all the changes that you’ve made here at Vistas, and then what goals you have (graduation and/or career goals). This will be due at the end of the week.

1/30/2015 – A

We reviewed what we read yesterday by adding information to the foldable that we made yesterday. We added information about Hrothgar and Beowulf.

Hrothgar

  • King of the Danes
  • helpless against Grendel
  • he “wept”

Grendel

  • Descendant of Cain (1st murderer)
  • doesn’t follow Anglo-Saxon values
  • Comes out at night
  • Can’t touch Hrothgar’s throne
  • hell-forged hands (kenning)
  • kills for fun

We read The Coming of Beowulf today – wow. What I can I say about Beowulf? He’s pretty awesome.

He really represents the values of the Anglo-Saxons. We talked about the difference between being COCKY and CONFIDENT – and that Beowulf was confident.

We also discussed why it was significant that Beowulf asked Hrothgar for permission to kill Grendel rather than busting in and kill stealing.

Then, I gave you some flex time to either work on missing assignments (MSG = a zero in the gradebook!) or to work on the Metaphorical Response.

1/30/2014

I started out today with an apology: Normally, I only read one section a day. BUT, because we have missed two days due to weather, I’ve had to compress two days of reading into one.

So understand that we are going to read WAY more than I usually ask you to do.

While we read, we take notes. Whatever I have highlighted or written down, I want you to write down or highlight. If you miss a day of reading, the best way to get caught up is by getting the notes from my hard copy in the classroom:

Beowulf NotesToday, we read The Wrath of Grendel and The Coming of Beowulf. For each of those headings, you should have turned the heading into a QUESTION on a Post-It Note. You will save these until the end of Beowulf and then you will turn them in. Please don’t give me your random Post-It Notes.

questions

Siria, since you missed today, you’ll need to make sure that you understand what happened. Get the notes, read on your own, and if you help, you can read this and this.

Lastly, I explained the Metaphorical Response. You will come up with ten metaphors from Beowulf. Make sure that your metaphors are real metaphors: don’t describe Beowulf as a soldier because he IS a soldier. Don’t describe Grendel as a monster because he IS a monster. Try to stick with inanimate objects.

You should have gotten the metaphor for Beowulf completed today. We will work a little each day on this, but you will need to keep up with the work. This will be due by Friday, February 7th.

When we finished reading, we

9/9/13 – A

I know, I know. I haven’t been updating my blog. It’s been tough teaching three classes and making the switch over to BlackBoard. I probably won’t use as many pictures as I have in years past, but hopefully this will still be useful to you.

We read The Coming over Beowulf today, highlighting and taking notes as usual.

AFtwewareds, we added Pagan/Christian quotes to our list.

Lastly, we did the Open Mind Diagram. You can find instructions (and an example) in Blackboard and you can find two templates you can choose from in Power Point. Make sure that you cite correctly!

1/30/2013

OK, Sorry about that last post. I was just too tired to update.

We started reading Beowulf – The Wrath of Grendel. Print Beowulf Text to OneNote and get the notes from a crew member who took good notes. Zully took good notes, Lorena took good notes, Brittany took good notes, and I’m pretty sure that in 3rd block, Victoria took good notes.

Here is a blurry picture of Grendel. GRRRR!

After that, we were given a bunch of quotes and we sorted them into FATE and FREE WILL.

Lastly, we tried on CHAIN MAIL! This is the type of armor that Beowulf wore. Here are some of my pirates wearing trying it on. 🙂

I’ll add more chain mail pics in the next posts.
