A few notes that we had today:

The end of the grading period is next week – SERIOUSLY! We don’t have time for procrastination. Every single person in here (except me!) has the goal of graduating and leaving in May/June, so make sure that your actions match your words. Don’t start in a deficit!

Thursday, we have play preview, but if you are failing, you’ll be staying in the classroom to get caught up on grades.

I won’t be here tomorrow, but I’m leaving legitimate work for you to do (vocabulary from Beowulf) that you’ll see again on the 6 weeks test next eek.

Speaking of tests, the 6 weeks test will be next Tuesday! Multiple choice!

So today, we worked on and/or finished the Apply Texas essay. The goal is around 500 words, but focus more on answering the essay prompt rather than a word count.

I’m going to start pulling people for Panther Den RTI soon, so check those schedules!

Hope to see your parents at Open House tonight!

So, my gradebook was up-to-date as of 9:30 last night. That means if there is a mistake, fill out the “Grade Mistake(s) in Skyward” form for me so that I have everything in writing.

mistakes

Please make sure that it’s a legitimate grade (as oppose to late work just not having been graded yet). If you don’t fill this out, I will not be able to fix the mistake.

Some other issues I addressed today:

  • The Beo-Boast reflection – you can still do it. It’s a small red link in the Blackboard drop box
  • Drop boxes in Blackboard, even if you did an assignment on paper
  • In order to access my Google documents, you have to have your KISD Google account as your default email account. What does that mean? Log off your personal email account, make sure your school email is logged in and working, and then you can log back in to your personal account. Please, stop sending me requests to access documents and surveys with your personal email account. Use your school email. I don’t know who pOOKiEBear1995@gmail.com is and I am not going to track you down, Pook.

So today, we created a text structure of how we are going to organize our essay and then we started writing it.

The rough draft will be due tomorrow. Aim for about 500 words. If you are really submitting this, I’ve been told it has to be between 350-650 words.

I am going to focus on three things when grading it:

  • Content – is this vague or specific? Did you manage to address the prompt appropriately?
  • Diction/word choice – this needs to be a mature and academic
  • Tone – this should be an academic and mature tone

One thing to think about is that even though word choice affects tone, what are other things that affect the tone of the essay?

Today, we talked about Apply Texas, a helpful webpage for people who are going to college in Texas. It’s a central location where you can submit one application for a multitude of Texas colleges and universities – and you only have to pay one fee! Pretty cool, right? Right! Some of you might not *need* this essay, and others of you (who are going to A&M) will be writing two of them!

We are writing Essay A:

apply

This is a very broad topic. So in order to help arrow down our ideas, we did a brainstorming activity in Blackboard. We went over my examples and I gave it to you to use as a model.

On Monday, we will choose the text structure for the essay and start writing it.
