We started out by filling the blanks on some common expressions. Don’t worry if you don’t know all them – just fill the blank in with a word that makes sense.

When we got done, I told the class that all of those expressions came from the Bible – lots of them surprised us! Some were pretty obviously Bible quotes, but others were so ingrained in our society we had NO idea that they first came from the Bible.

I gave you the complete list, and asked you to highlight any expression that you had heard said before.

We went to the King James Bible section of BB and downloaded the King James Bible Background and highlighted pertinent information. If you missed, please get the notes from someone in class. bible 1bible 2

Then, we talked about how there is a Bible as Literature class in Texas. We talked about my college class where people dropped a Mythology class because there were sections from the Bible on the syllabus – they dropped because they thought the professor was saying the Bible was FAKE, but all MYTH means is a story.

We also read an article that was written by a guy who taught Bible as Literature for over 30 years. He explained why it was so important for college, how he taught it, and how his students reacted to it.

Then, we answered and/or responded to one of the questions that his questions posed.

Lastly, we answered three questions in BB under the Bible as Literature Discussion board. This is focusing on the Bible elective that Texas offers in high school. This is NOT a religion class: it’s a Bible as Literature – it looks at the stories in a secular manner. Make sure you answer all three questions!

Today, I made sure that you guys knew the word SECULAR.

Then, we read three short pieces from the KJ Bible: Ecclesiastes 3, Psalm 23, and the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

Make sure that you know that Ecclesiastes is a MAXIM.

Then, we filled in a list of common phrases that you hear in every day life. Even if you don’t know a blank, make sure that you still fill it in. Take a guess! I promise, you’ll be surprised at how many you actually know when you get the answer sheet. πŸ™‚ The big surprise? All of those phrases came from the Bible!
