We started out by filling the blanks on some common expressions. Don’t worry if you don’t know all them – just fill the blank in with a word that makes sense.

When we got done, I told the class that all of those expressions came from the Bible – lots of them surprised us! Some were pretty obviously Bible quotes, but others were so ingrained in our society we had NO idea that they first came from the Bible.

I gave you the complete list, and asked you to highlight any expression that you had heard said before.

We went to the King James Bible section of BB and downloaded the King James Bible Background and highlighted pertinent information. If you missed, please get the notes from someone in class. bible 1bible 2

Then, we talked about how there is a Bible as Literature class in Texas. We talked about my college class where people dropped a Mythology class because there were sections from the Bible on the syllabus – they dropped because they thought the professor was saying the Bible was FAKE, but all MYTH means is a story.

We also read an article that was written by a guy who taught Bible as Literature for over 30 years. He explained why it was so important for college, how he taught it, and how his students reacted to it.

Then, we answered and/or responded to one of the questions that his questions posed.

Lastly, we answered three questions in BB under the Bible as Literature Discussion board. This is focusing on the Bible elective that Texas offers in high school. This is NOT a religion class: it’s a Bible as Literature – it looks at the stories in a secular manner. Make sure you answer all three questions!

Today, we honed our persuasive skills by writing a letter to Mrs. Ekster asking her to allow someone to teach the Bible as Literature class at Vistas.

There is a pre-writing activity in LMS that you will print out and complete before writing your letter. Rather than persuade with ethos or pathos, we will focus on logos, which is logic. That means you need to have logical reasons why this class should be offered here. You may need to use the internet to help you organize your ideas, In fact, I heartily recommend it!

One thing that I want to remind you of is that a Bible as Literature class is NOT the same thing as a religion class. We cannot teach religion classes in a public school, so if you try to use religion as a reason why we need to allow a Bible class as an elective, that wouldn’t be appropriate.

The pre-writing is due today; – the paper is due on Friday.

4/16/2013

We started off the day with a pop quiz over the Bible! On my own, I earned 15/25. 1st block (Thanks to Josh A. and Felipe), earned a whopping 19/25. 2nd and 3rd Block earned a measly 14/25.

Then, we read the background of the King James Bible and discussed what the differences are between teaching the Bible as Literature (or History) and a religion class.

Then, we read Ecclesiastes 3:1 –

This was the perfect example of how the Bible can be considered a piece of literature.

Then, we read Psalms 3:1

This was an example of how the Bible can be literature and still be a religious text at the same time.

Then, we read our last bit for the day – the Parable of the Prodigal Son:

If we had time, Riley played a game where she played music and you had to find the what part of the Bible it was alluding to (one of the three things we just read), but this wasn’t a grade.

Lastly, we answered three questions in the discussion board – The Bible as Literature Discussion Board. Make sure you REPLY to each question – you can find REPLY in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

We started out today with a discussion board about where we find wisdom. Make sure that you list ONE place or person where you find wisdom. Read your classmates, and rate them on how helpful they are.

WE then read the Article Bible as Literature and and answered the Discussion Board questions: Bible as Literature. Only three questions – pretty simple.

As of right now, 7 students would take a Bible as Literature class here at Vistas; * would pass it. Pair has two votes to teach the class, Schinderling has 1 vote to teach it, Riley has1 vote, and Gonzalez has one vote.

We read the King James Background. Get the notes from a classmate.

We read Ecclesiastes  3:1 and listened to the song Turn, Turn, Turn. Get the notes from a classmate.
