5/28/14

We just worked on the Thematic Collage today.

A few notes:

  • Computers will be taken up first thing tomorrow morning. Print your pictures today so that you can do this work.
  • I will not accept late work once finals start (which is Monday).
  • If your average is under a 75, there is a good chance that if you fail the final, you will fail the class.
  • I will not be here on Friday due to surgery, so if your collage is NOT turned in on Thursday, I’ll give you a zero. However, I WILL be here on Saturday, so if you do your collage on Friday and turn it in, I will be able to grade it on Saturday.

I will be giving final exams ALL next week, so I will not be able to grade late work. Get it in!

Today, we started the Thematic Poster: BEFORE YOU START THE POSTER, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE THEMATIC STATEMENT WRITTEN.

The instructions are all in Blackboard.

You can’t just make a collage over jealousy – the collage is over your THEMATIC SENTENCE!

Put all of your pictures in a Word document and drop off for me to print in BB.

This is what will be graded:

  • Generous amount of pictures and symbols
  • A thematic statement
  • One quote from the original source
  • One quote from a secondary source
  • Five synonyms or related words
  • A paragraph explaining the pictures and your thoughts about the theme you chose

We finished Pygmalion today – make sure you that you turn your “Pyg” questions in the drop box so that I can grade them.

Also, a lot of people are still missing the Dante’s Inferno Reading Guide questions – that’s 40 points, so make sure you get that in!

We took this dialect quiz (this is not an accent quiz on how you pronounce words, but rather what words you actually say).

We also watched a few clips of a video of people talking in a Scottish accent.

See you tomorrow when we start our LAST MAJOR GRADE! 🙂

Here is Riley’s test results on her dialect:

Riley's speechWhat’s really weird about this is that I DID grow up in Saint Louis, but I’ve lived here in Houston for over 20 years. It’s really weird how it figured this out. 🙂

Today, we started watching Pygmalion. If you were absent, you can watch the movie here on your home computer or phone.

We are also going to answer the Pygmalion Viewing questions. You can find those either on your Desktop if I sent them to you (Pyg Questions) or you can download them from Blackboard.

Some questions we talked about today:

  • Do poor people get unfairly targeted by the police? Is that justified or unjustified?
  • Is taking down people’s words the same thing as taking pictures of people without their permission?
  • Can a way a person speaks keep them “in the gutter”? Explain.
