Happy New Year!

We are starting a new unit today: Pygmalion!

We did two activities today: the anticipation guide and the IPA alphabet.

First, the Anticipation Guide: Make sure you spend some time answering these four questions in detail. Here are my answers:

ENGLISH IV                                                                           Name: ____________________________________

Pygmalion Anticipation Guide                                                  Date: _______________  Per: ___________

Directions:  Answer the following questions honestly.  Be sure to include the reasons WHY you feel a certain way!

1.         Describe the perfect mate.  What does he/she look like, dress like, act like?  What are his/her hobbies, goals, etc.?
  • Non-smoker
  • Clean
  • No kids
  • Goals/job
  • Smart
  • Nice to his mother
  • (List of 100 things I want for my next BF) – Husband was 96
  • Good kisser 😉
  • Adventurous
  • Appropriate dress – I don’t want to embarrassed
  • NO fantasy football
  • Height/weight appropriate
  • Close to own age
2.         Joe has recently entered your 2nd period class, and is clearly from another country.  He struggles with the English language, and some in the class make fun of his mistakes.  How do you act in this case?
  • Joe – tell Joe that it’s no big deal. He’s learning a new language, and those dummies barely know one language
  • Teacher – that I’m really upset that those kids are being jerk faces
  • I would tell the kids to lighten up – that it’s no big deal. If they went to a new country, they’d have problems with the new language, too.
3.         You are approached by a poorly-dressed person on the street.  What do you think this person wants?  Why do you think that?

I’m going to think that he wants money for drugs. I’ve known too many homeless people who are scammers. When I lived in the Inner Loop, we even had names for them, Like Cyclops. He was scarier than the other because I KNEW he was scamming people.

4.         Does money change people?  If you answered “yes,” explain how you think it changes them.  If you answered “no,” explain how a person can remain unchanged by money.

I think it has to. I think it changes your motives for things. I think it would also make you question people’s motives towards you – like you are always going to be thinking that people are hanging out with you because they want your money.

Then, we did the IPA activity. You can find this in Blackboard > Pygmalion > IPA. I also some some extra sheets printed in the classroom. Make sure you SOUND this out!

1/6/14

Happy New Year! We just have a few days left, so make the most of them!

A few notes: All items have been graded as of 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, so if you have turned something in late, don’t expect me to drop everything and grade. It will get graded. You can’t always get instant gratification when you turn your work in late.

If you are clapping out, you have to be passing by 3:00 this afternoon. If you are planning on GRADUATING, but you don’t clap out in time, you can still graduate as long as you earn your credit.

We still have 250 points to go before we stop working. After today’s assignments, we will be at 1300 points. I am in the process of giving you guys Post It notes with the number of points that you have, how many points you need to earn to pass/exempt/make an “A” in the class. If you didn’t get one today, you’ll get one tomorrow.

There are two extra credit opportunities to earn up to 200 points. This is all extra credit, so even if you don’t get it ALL done, turn in what you have. The extra credit is very easy to be portioned up, so if you don’t have much time to devote, try doing what you can. You might surprise yourself!

Now, on to today’s assignments. We are going to watch the play Pygmalion. The myth of Pygmalion can be found here. If you weren’t here to listen to my recitation of the story, then you need to read it.

We will be  watching Pygmalion, a play which is a modern day (at the time) retelling of the Pygmalion myth.
Go to the Pygmalion folder and get the Anticipation Guide Questions. Answer the questions as full as possible. If it gives you any indication of how much time I want you spend on this, I gave that class between 15-20 minutes to answer the questions. Drop these off in the drop box when you are done.

The last assignment we did was the IPA alphabet. You will need to use the chart I gave you and try to translate the words/sentences from IPA to modern English. Think of it like a puzzle. Turn in all three worksheets and the IPA chart stapled together. You’ll need it on the final exam.

Then we talked about the extra credit mobile. The instructions for this can be found in the Final Exam Review folder – for each story, you will do a strand. If you are pressed for time, just get the information written down – I can give you credit for what you do.
