Today is the day that we start the Foil Flip Doll – part 1 of the Othello Project!

The instructions were printed out for you, they were read aloud to you, and they are also in Blackboard – I have multiple examples for you to look at if you need help. Avoid just using protagonists and antagonists (simply enemies or good guys and bad guys!). Also avoid characters who DON’T talk – it’s going to be harder to describe their relationship if they just have a simple personality, like Tom and Jerry.

Instructions for the Foil Flip Doll:

Cut the dude and the two bibs out.

Put the main character on the front flap and write a really good description of him or her.

Do the same with the second character.

On the last flap, put a definition of  foil and explain why these two are foils.

____ IS SO ____ THAT HE MAKES ___ SEEM EVEN MORE ___.

I have a huge pile of examples that former students have done in case you get *really* stuck, but try to think of your own.

Today, we watched an epic rap battle between Dr. Seuss and Shakespeare. This was similar to the “battle” between Beowulf and Unferth. Actually, this is called flyting – and it is very similar to freestyle rap that we see nowadays.

We read Unferth’s challenge and watched Strindberg and Helium cartoons. Helium is Stringberg’s foil – he is so happy and cheerful that he makes Strindberg seem even more depressed.

There is a Dropbox in Beowulf where I ask you tell me who you you are going to use so I can approve it.

Make sure that you answer the Metacognitive Element so that you get full credit!

Foil Flip Doll

  • What did you do?
  • What was the purpose behind doing it?
  • How are Emilia and Desdemona literary foils? What is the purpose of this relationship? Find a quote that shows the difference between the two.
  • How are Roderigo and Iago literary foils? What is the purpose of this relationship? Find a quote that shows the difference between the two.
  • Do you think that the protagonist and antagonist (like Othello and Iago) can be literary foils, or does that relationship not count because it’s too obvious?

I *did* forget to show the epic rap battle today, so Daniel is helping me out and reminding me to show it tomorrow.

Sneeze #4 happened today! We sneezed about control. Just FYI – Riley is a bit of a control freak. She is not a fan of fate.

Today, we read The Coming of Beowulf and sections 6 and 7 about Unferth. Basically, Beowulf came to help out King Hrothgar of the Danes because Grendel has been attacking his people for twelve years. Everyone recognizes that he is hard core, except Unferth. Unferth puts him on blast, telling him that he heard that Beowulf lost a swimming contest and that if he lost a swimming contest , how could he possibly defeat Grendel?!?!

Beowulf came back and said that he *WAS* hardcore, that he killed nine monsters that is mroe important than winning some swimming contest.

We then watched these weird cartoons – Strindberg and Helium and figured out what a literary foil is, and then Riley gave us one last assignment that will be due next Friday: A Foil Flip Doll.

Basically you get a doll and two “bibs” – cut them out.

Character #2 + a description.

Flip the last bib up and this information should be present:

Top: a definition of a literary foil in your own words. Bottom bid – an explanation of how Character #2 is Character #1’s literary foil.

CHARCTER #2 is so ________ he/she makes CHARACTRER #1 seem even more _________________.

9/9/11

Today is the day, Friday. You know what that means, it means that today was the day that Beowulf took down Grendel. oh yeah. But today Mrs. Riley was Grendel and Block 3’s Devante was Beowulf. He really showed Grendel who was boss. We read what really happened, sword’s couldn’t take Grendel down at all, but Beowulf’s hands, which had the strength of 30 men, took him down and TORE OFF HIS ARM. Gross but really cool, huh. Beowulf kept the arm as a trophy. It must have really stunk after a while. Grendel died in his cave but at the bottom of the text we will soon be seeing the WRATH OF GRENDELS MOTHER. Don’t mess with momma bear.

After that we all pretty much just finished our foil people. Not very fun but still something to do then just sitting there with a blank expression on your face, right?
