Seriously. Is no one else going to do these things? I’m the only one getting extra credit in here, and I’m not even a student. I’m a paper mache monkey, for cryin’ out loud!

Today, our journal was the carpe diem story that is a popular forwarded e-mail. We then signed up for a BucketList account. Make sure that you open the link up OUTSIDE OF LMS, because otherwise youwon’t be able to create an account. Use your Gaggle e-mail (first intial, last name, first four digits of your student ID), because they will send you a verification e-mail, and you’ll need to be able to access this e-mail at school.

We then spent the rest of the day writing our obituaries. Make sure that you use the models that Riley provided for us. Also, when you are completely done with the Obituary, copy your text, make a Wordle from it, and send it again to Edmodo. Make sure that you mention which Wordle it is (to distinuish it from the previous one that we did).

And that is pretty much it. For the record, Randy was the first one done – with his obituary *and* his Wordle. Go Randy! w00t!

Today was… interesting. We started out with this creepy picture: Death and Devil Surprising Two Women. We spent some time talking about this picture, and this led into a discussion about Carpe Diem, the idea of seizing the day.

Death and the Devil Surprising Two Women

We then went to the Blog of Death and started looking at obituaries of extraordinary people. Not famous people, but people who really embodied the idea of Carpe Diem. We made Wordles based on those obituaries and sent them to Edmodo so Riley can print them in color.

Riley then shared with us that we will be writing our own obituaries tomorrow, and we looked at pre-writing questions and the obituary that Riley wrote. We need to make sure that we write this as if we are REALLY old. Don’t write this as if you died today. That’s creepy.

Some key points that we talked about:

  • Obituaries are about the person’s life, not about the person’s death.
  • Riley wants to be cremated.
  • Don’t focus on the death when you write your obituary. That’s creepy and weird.

Also, if you WANT EXTRA CREDIT, please let Riley know (she’s going to send out an Edmodo alert today). She’ll create an account spo taht you can post things just like me! Except you’ll get credit for this!

Wow! What a day! The first day of the last term!

We started out with a journal entry about procrastination – the different ways we procrastinate and how we can fix them. We have a lot of  “dreamers” here at Vistas!

We then moved along and filled out an application for the Fiesty Haggis. Chase caught a Riley typo in the LMS title of the survey, But Riley fixed it. We all laughed at Riley pantomiming her impression of a powder monkey, but she didn’t know what all of the pirate positions were! What kind of captain is that?

Edmodo was next on the agenda. Returning students logged in and new students created accounts, and all students made sure that they got alerts and direct messages sent to their cell phones.

Then came the highlight of the day: Creative Coloring. Riley gave each person a different colored marker (some people chose by color, and others chose by scent) and were told to draw a picture. But we couldn’t trade colors or have someone else use our color marker (some did both).

1st block drew a fruit bowl:

Second Block, uh, they drew a “Lemonade Stand.” Kind of.

And 3rd Block were the kiss ups. They drew a pirate ship:

To finish that activity off, we went to Riley’s Blog (this one right here) and answered five questions on Creative Coloring.

The last thing that we were supposed to do that was the Carpe Diem Translation Tower, but we didn’t get to it. Some did, some didn’t. So there should be some time tomorrow to get that done.

Yo, ho, ho!

What is a Scribe post?

This is the first Scribe post for Captain Riley’s class. Students who want extra credit will soon take over the position of Scribe!

So, this is a test post!

When students do a test post, give a summary of what we did in class that day (you can use the Agenda for help), main ideas that we talked about, any inside jokes, pictures, and any other details you can add to make the post meaningful.

If you want to sign up to be a Scribe for Extra Credit, then make a post here and I’ll get you signed up!

Flat Riley

There is a new extra credit project up for Term 2. It is the Flat Riley project for the Texas Renaissance Festival. Check out the crazy instructions in Angel LMS.

Also, make sure that you are here on time for Vistas Visits this Friday – there is a HUGE surprise. All I’ll say is that we are going to have someone special read the mission statement in the morning. 😉

I am SO HORRIBLE at keeping secrets!
